Warriors Sweep Way To Upset Of CUW

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – Backed by junior Alyssa Charron's (Appleton, Wis.) 11 kills and nine block assists, the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team swept conference frontrunner Concordia Wisconsin Wednesday night in its final NACC match of the season inside the Recreation Complex. It was the Warriors' first sweep of the Falcons since 2012 and first in conference play since 2003.

  • The Falcons took an early lead in the back-and-forth opening set, holding a 14-11 advantage at the midway point. The Warriors would close on a 10-2 run, forcing CUW to commit six errors down the stretch as WLC won the first set 25-19.
  • The Warriors raced out to an early 11-6 lead in the second set before the Falcons gained some momentum to bring the score back within one. Back-to-back kills by junior Grace Tomhave (Lake Mills, Wis.) and freshman Emily Sarles (Lombard, Ill.) sparked a 9-3 stretch for Wisconsin Lutheran as it won 25-21.
  • With the lead of just one early in the third set, the Warriors took control of the set thanks to an 11-2 run, including seven consecutive points to extend their lead to 18-8. CUW would get as close as five, but the Warriors cruised to a 25-19 victory in the set, sweeping the co-conference champion Falcons. The Green and White hit a match-high .314 in the third stanza.

  • Alyssa Charron paced the Warriors with 11 kills and finished with a match-high .429 hitting percentage. She also recorded nine of the team's 22 block assists. Tomhave added seven kills on a .263 hitting percentage along with four block assists.
  • Sophomore Michelle Haling (Antioch, Ill.) and Sarles combined for 26 of the 32 Warriors' assists, finishing with 16 and 10, respectively.
  • Sophomore Mercedes Pye (Zion, Ill.) led WLC with 12 digs and two service aces. 
  • Wisconsin Lutheran garnered the fifth seed in next week's NACC Tournament and will travel to face fourth-seeded Dominican Tuesday night in the first round.

  • Jenna Chaussee led the Falcons with nine kills. Megan Mayer added seven along with four service aces and 11 digs.
  • CUW was held to .065 hitting for the match, its lowest output of the season.

  • The Warriors play their final three matches of the regular season this weekend when they host the eight-team Warrior Invitational. WLC opens invite play Friday at 7:00 p.m. against Simpson (8-16). Live stats and video will be available at WLCSports.com.
