Women's Volleyball Falls Twice Saturday In La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team traveled to La Crosse Saturday for its final two non-conference road matches of the season. The Warriors suffered a pair of 3-1 setbacks to the Elmhurst Bluejays and the host UW-La Crosse Eagles inside Mitchell Hall to snap their five-match winning streak.

  • The Warriors were never able to grab a lead in the first set against the Bluejays. Elmhurst turned an 8-7 lead into an eight-point advantage following a 10-3 scoring run. EC won the opening set from WLC, 25-14.
  • The Bluejays jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the second set, but the Warriors fought back to jump in front 17-15 thanks to a six-point scoring streak. WLC trailed again 22-20, but came back to score three in a row and then fought off set point with three more points for a 28-26 win. The Warriors put down 19 kills and hit a team-high .279 in the set.
  • Elmhurst started out set three with a 6-2 lead only to see Wisconsin Lutheran come back with six straight for a two-point lead. With WLC leading 10-8, the Bluejays used a 10-2 scoring spurt to grab a 18-12 lead. EC won set three by a final score of 25-19.
  • WLC took an 8-6 lead in a back-and-forth fourth set and had an 11-9 lead only to see the Bluejays take it back. A 7-2 EC scoring run gave them the lead for good as the Bluejays won 25-20 to win the match three to one.
  • The Eagles broke a 4-4 tie with a 7-0 scoring run in the opening set of match two. UWL led by as many as 13 points before taking the set 25-14.
  • UW-La Crosse jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set and never trailed. Wisconsin Lutheran trailed 6-5, but could not get any closer despite a four-point scoring run later in the set. The Eagles took the second set 25-21.
  • The Warriors broke open a back-and-forth beginning of the fourth set with five straight points for a 19-12 lead. The Eagles later used a 6-1 run to fight off set point and take a 25-24 lead only to see WLC end the set with three straight points of its own and claim the 27-25 win.
  • The Warriors could never take the lead in the fourth set and fell victim to a 7-0 Eagles scoring run and a 15-7 deficit. Wisconsin Lutheran came back to trim its deficit to 19-16 but ultimately fell 25-18.


  • Carly Heuer (Germantown, Wis.), Mercedes Pye (Zion, Ill.), and Emily Sarles (Lombard, Ill.) each recorded double-doubles against the Bluejays. Heuer and Pye posted a team-high 11 kills each, while adding 11 and 12 digs, respectively. Sarles added 21 assists and 12 digs. Michelle Haling (Antioch, Ill.) also distributed 21 assists and Ally Goba (Mukwonago, Wis.) had a match-high 23 digs.
  • Grace Tomhave (Lake Mills, Wis.) led Wisconsin Lutheran with 13 kills against La Crosse. Sarles and Haling recorded 24 and 10 assists, respectively. Mercedes Pye and Goba registered 13 and 12 digs each.


  • Payton Froats posted 14 kills, Hannah Horn collected 38 assists, and Valerie Thomas dug up 22 attacks for the Bluejays.
  • Emma Lawrence amassed a match-high 23 kills and 13 digs for the Eagles, while Abbey Fox recorded 39 assists and 13 digs. UWL hit .299 for the match (55-17-127).


  • The Warriors return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Fond du Lac for a 7:00 p.m. match with Marian (3-10, 0-1 NACC).
