Warriors Upended By Stars In NACC Tournament Opener

RIVER FOREST, Ill. (WLCSports.com) - The sixth-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team saw its 2018 season come to an end Tuesday in the first round of the NACC Tournament as it fell to third-seeded Dominican, 3-0, inside the Igini Sports Forum. The loss ends the Warriors' season with an 18-12 record after making its second straight appearance in the conference tournament.

  • The Warriors came out hot with an 8-1 lead and shortly after had their largest lead of the set at 10-2. The Stars began to slowly cut into the deficit, but Wisconsin Lutheran maintained a 15-11 advantage. DU tied the set for the first time at 16-16, and following two more ties, scored six straight to take a 24-18 lead and win the opener, 25-20. The Green and White were held to -0.116 hitting in the set.
  • The beginning of the second set was deadlocked as it featured six ties, but saw Wisconsin Lutheran hold a 10-8 lead. Dominican responded with four straight, and after a point from WLC, the hosts rattled off another four in a row for a 16-11 lead. The Stars then ran off seven straight points to break open the set at 23-14 and won the set 25-17.
  • WLC jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set and held a two-point lead before DU scored four straight to take its first lead at 8-6. With the score knotted at 9-9, the Stars went on another 4-0 spurt and went ahead by as many as five at 16-11. The Warriors battled back to even the set at 21-21 and the Stars emerged from the back-and-forth battle, 25-23. Dominican hit a match-best .235 in the third set.

  • Carly Heuer (Germantown, Wis.) and Grace Tomhave (Lake Mills, Wis.) tallied eight kills apiece for the Warriors. Tomhave, who hit .438, also added four block assists along with teammate Alyssa Charron (Appleton, Wis.).
  • Cassidy Johnson (Germantown, Wis.) passed out 17 assists to go along with nine digs. Britley Grulke (Hustisford, Wis.) and Dayton Pye (Zion, Ill.) also added nine digs each.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran was held to its second lowest hitting percentage of the season at .041.

  • Gabija Sinickaite posted a match-high 11 kills while hitting .500 for the Stars. Anastasia Labadessa passed out 26 assists and Megan Parker added 19 digs.
  • Dominican advances to Thursday's NACC Tournament semifinal at second-seeded Concordia Wisconsin.

  • Wisconsin Lutheran finishes its 2018 season 18-12 overall and 7-5 in the NACC. The 18 wins along with seven conference victories are the most since 2011 and its consecutive conference tournament appearances are the first since 2012-2013.
