WLC Opens Warrior Invitational With Two Wins

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team picked up two wins on the opening day of the inaugural Warrior Invitational Friday night. The Warriors downed Central in a five-set showdown to open the tournament and then defeated Maranatha 3-1 to close out the night.

  • Central opened the match by hitting .237 and holding the hosts to -.029 hitting in the set in a 25-13 win over WLC.
  • The two teams were even to start the second set, tied at 7-7, until the Warriors used a five-point swing to take a 12-7 lead.
  • WLC never relinquished the lead the remainder of the set, winning 25-23.
  • CC opened the third set by taking a 16-12 lead, but the Warriors tied the contest at 19-19, then scored three more points to take a 22-19 advantage.
  • Central responded and used a 6-2 run to take a 25-24 lead, but Grace Tomhave (Lake Mills, Wis.) tied the contest at 25-25 with a kill, then the Warriors used the momentum to win the third set, 28-26.
  • The Dutch opened the fourth set on a 9-4 run, then pushed their lead to 23-13, forcing the Warriors to take a timeout. Central closed out the fourth set, winning 25-17 and tied the contest at two sets apiece.
  • WLC opened the fifth set with an 11-8 lead, but Central responded and used a 5-1 run to take a 13-12 lead.
  • The Warriors closed out the fifth set with three straight points, capped off by a kill from Carly Heuer (Germantown, Wis.).
  • Heuer led WLC with 14 kills in the opening match, while Cassidy Johnson (Germantown, Wis.) registered 27 assists and two service aces.

 

  • The Sabercats opened the contest with a 25-16 victory in set one, hitting .333 in the opening set.
  • WLC responded in the second set, taking a 14-9 lead, forcing MBU to take a timeout.
  • The Warriors used an 11-7 run to close out the second set, winning 25-16.
  • The two teams traded points in the third set, and remained tied at 12-12 before the Warriors used a 9-5 swing to take a 21-17 lead.
  • Maranatha scored the next two points, but the Warriors closed out the set with four straight, highlighted by a service ace from Mercedes Pye (Zion, Ill.).
  • Wisconsin Lutheran opened the fourth set with a 10-6 lead, but the Sabercats used a 6-2 swing to tie the set at 12-12.
  • Neither team could gain an advantage and remained knotted at 19-19.
  • MBU took a 22-21 lead, but the Warriors were able to close out the fourth set on a 4-0 run to take the fourth set 25-22, and the match 3-1.
  • WLC hit a season-high .331 in its second match, with Heuer leading the attack with 14 kills and Britley Grulke (Hustisford, Wis.) adding 13 on an impressive .520 hitting percentage. Alyssa Charron (Appleton, Wis.) totaled 10 kills for a .588 percentage.
  • Johnson tallied 33 assists and 10 digs, while Melissa Ericson (Lisle, Ill.) recorded a team-high 17 digs.

  • Wisconsin Lutheran continues the Warrior Invitational tomorrow when it faces MSOE in its final regular season match. The Raiders (9-18) fell to Maranatha and Central by scores of 3-0 Friday night. First serve is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at WLCSports.com.
