Spartans Stop Warriors' Winning Streak At Nine

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team fell to the visiting Aurora Spartans, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in a battle of two of the league's unbeatens inside the Recreation Complex. The visitors ended the Warriors' nine-match winning streak, which was the longest for WLC since the 2010 season.

  • The two teams traded points to open the contest, but the Spartans used a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead early in the first set.
  • The Warriors responded with a six-point swing of their own to take a 14-13 advantage, but Aurora closed out the first set on a 12-6 run to take set one, 25-20.
  • The Spartans opened the second set with a 9-2 run, forcing WLC to take a timeout early in set two.
  • WLC answered after the timeout with four straight points to cut the Aurora lead to 9-6, but the Spartans extended their lead to 20-16 and forced WLC to take their second timeout of the set.
  • The Warriors used a four-point swing to tie the contest at 20, forcing AU to take a timeout of its own.
  • Aurora took a 24-21 advantage, but the Warriors battled back and tied the contest at 25-25.
  • AU won the final two points of the set, taking set two 27-25.
  • The visitors opened the third set with a 5-3 run, but WLC rattled off five straight points to take an 8-5 lead.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran was able to extend its lead to 17-12, then pushed the lead to 21-16 after forcing two straight Aurora errors.
  • The hosts closed out the second set on a 4-2 run, taking the third set 25-18.
  • Aurora started the fourth set on a 7-2 run, then pushed its lead to 12-6, forcing WLC into a timeout.
  • The visitors never relinquished the lead in the fourth set en route to a 25-13 set victory, taking the match 3-1.

  • Alyssa Charron (Appleton, Wis.) led the Warriors with 12 kills while Mercedes Pye (Zion, Ill.) added 10 kills and 21 digs.
  • Dayton Pye (Zion, Ill) tallied a team-high 24 digs and Cassidy Johnson (Germantown, Wis.) dished out 39 assists along with 15 digs.
  • WLC was held to .183 hitting in the contest, and hit a match-high .295 in the third set.
  • The Warriors suffered their first home defeat and their first loss overall since September 14.

  • Katie Vondra and Imani Freeman paced a balanced AU attack with 15 kills apiece, while Karli Chambers added 14.
  • Emily Lines dished out 52 assists and Vondra led the Spartans with 23 digs.
  • Aurora hit .223 in the match and registered eight service aces in the victory.

  • The Warriors resume NACC play next Friday when they host Illinois Tech for Senior Night. The Scarlet Hawks (3-13, 1-6 NACC) fell to MSOE Saturday afternoon, 3-0. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at WLCSports.com.
