Women's Volleyball Outlasts Delay, Sabercats For Five-Set Win

WATERTOWN, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team withstood a court condensation delay and overcame a five-point deficit in the fifth set to defeat Maranatha 3-2 Thursday night in a non-conference match inside Maranatha Gymnasium. Cassidy Johnson (Germantown, Wis.) tied a school record with 54 assists as the Warriors won their fifth straight match.

  • Maranatha jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before the Warriors answered back with five straight points of their own in the first set.
  • After a back-and-forth set, Wisconsin Lutheran pulled away for a 16-11 lead before taking the first set 25-18 behind a match-high .351 attack percentage.
  • In a tightly-contested second set, Wisconsin Lutheran held a late 24-22 lead before Maranatha stormed back to take the 25-24 advantage. The Sabercats ended up knotting the match at 1-1 after a 28-26 second set victory.
  • The third set kept par with the opening sets that saw WLC hold a 17-16 lead before the Green and White rattled off the final eight points of the set off the serving of Alyssa Charron (Appleton, Wis.) to take the 2-1 match lead.
  • The hosts fought off elimination and forced a decisive fifth set with an impressive 25-19 fourth set victory.
  • Following nearly a half hour delay due to court condensation at the beginning of the final set, MBU jumped out to a 9-4 lead. Wisconsin Lutheran fought back, taking its first lead at 14-13. The Warriors then held on for an 18-16 final set and match win.

  • The Warriors had three players post double-doubles, led by Mercedes Pye (Zion, Ill.) 18 kills and 24 digs.
  • Johnson tied a school record with 54 assists while adding 13 digs, and Britley Grulke (Hustisford, Wis.) tallied 15 kills and 13 digs.
  • Charron hit .333 on 13 kills and Grulke posted a .295 percentage as the Warriors hit over .200 for the fourth straight match.
  • Dayton Pye (Zion, Ill.) and Melissa Ericson (Lisle, Ill.) contributed 18 and 15 digs each.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran set season highs for kills (67), assists (59), and digs (96).
  • WLC snapped a four-match losing streak to the Sabercats, who had won seven of the last eight meetings.

  • Gabrielle Carpenter led the hosts with 12 kills.
  • Kelsey Johnson just missed a triple-double with nine kills, 18 digs, and 21 assists.
  • The Sabercats hit a .096 for the match.
