Warriors Tame Sabres In Home Opener

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team opened its 2018 home campaign by defeating the visiting Marian Sabres 3-0 in convincing fashion Tuesday night inside the Recreation Complex. Mercedes Pye (Zion, Ill.) tallied her third straight double-double and Cassidy Johnson (Germantown, Wis.) dished out 30 assists in the victory. With the win, the Warriors started off NACC play 2-0 for the first time since 2007.

  • Both teams again traded points in the opening stages of the second set, but the hosts were able to pull away again, using an 8-2 run to take a 12-6 advantage, forcing Marian to call a timeout.
  • WLC continued to control the momentum of the contest, holding a 21-16 lead, then rattled off four straight points, powered by two kills from Alyssa Charron (Appleton, Wis.) to take set two, 25-16.
  • Marian came out strong in the third set, holding a 13-10 advantage, but the Warriors scored six straight points to take a 16-13 lead.
  • After taking the 16-13 lead, the Warriors used a 9-2 run to close out the match, with three straight kills from Britley Grulke (Hustisford, Wis.) and a service ace from Dayton Pye (Zion, Ill.) to close out the set 25-16.

  • Grulke paced the WLC offense with 13 kills and nine digs, while Mercedes Pye added a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs, hitting .550 for the match.
  • Johnson dished out 30 assists, her third straight contest with 30+ assists.
