Second-Half Surge Leads Warriors Over Lakeland

BROOKFIELD, Wis. ( – Behind four second-half goals, the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's soccer team broke a 1-1 tie and defeated Lakeland Wednesday night 5-1 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action at Brookfield Central High School.

  • The Warriors opened the scoring 13 minutes into the first half after a Muskies foul allowed junior Gabriella Metten (Greenville, Wis.) to score on a penalty kick for her third goal of the season.
  • The score would stay 1-0 for the remainder of the first half, but the Muskies tied the game early in the second half as Jenna Borts scored on a shot from 25 yards out.
  • WLC responded quickly by scoring three consecutive goals in less than a 10-minute span. Sophomore Kayla Mitchell (Green Bay, Wis.) scored in the 52nd minute after a junior Kendra Schumacher (Little Chute, Wis.) cross found her right foot for her second goal of the season.
  • Four minutes later, sophomore Maggie Stebbins (Beaver Dam, Wis.) added to the lead with an unassisted goal to the upper right corner. Sophomore Miriam Carreno (San Antonio, Texas) capped off the scoring surge in the 60th minute to make the score 4-1.
  • Carreno scored her second goal of the game and fifth of the season in the 66th minute as she slid and kicked a pass from Metten into the lower right corner and past the keeper. The goal pushed the Warriors' lead to four.

  • WLC attempted 20 shots, with 11 resulting as shots on goal. Carreno led the Warriors with seven shots and four on goal.
  • Metten's goal and pair of assists raised her point total to 10 on the season. Nine of those points have come in the past three games, including two penalty kick goals.
  • Freshman Kayla Pagel (Kenosha, Wis.) improved to 3-1-0 on the season after playing all 90:00 minutes in net. She did not make any saves.
  • The Warriors won their third straight game over the Muskies and five out of their last six in the series.

  • Erin Tomlinson finished with six saves on 11 shots faced for the Muskies. Borts finished with the team's only shot on goal and converted it for the equalizer early in the second half.
