Women's Soccer Drops Home Opener Against Stars

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's soccer team dropped its first conference match of the season, falling 8-1 to Dominican Saturday afternoon in its home opener at Warriors Soccer Field. Dominican's Regan Coxon finished with five goals in the win for the visiting Stars.

  • The Stars raced out to a 1-0 lead as Regan Coxon scored in the second minute after a feed from Josseline Williams allowed her to dribble through the defense and score from 15 yards out.
  • Dominican found more success in a two-minute stretch in the middle of the first half. Coxon scored twice in the 24th minute and Denisse Avila scored in the 25th minute off a crossing pass to push the Stars' lead to four.
  • The Warriors scored first in the second half when junior Kendra Schumacher (Little Chute, Wis.) scored her fourth goal of the season after she outran the Stars defense and found the back of the net.
  • Coxon scored her fourth and fifth goals of the game in the second half to extend the lead to 6-1. Avila added her second goal and Ashleigh Huerta scored off a deflection as the Stars won 8-1.

  • Schumacher's goal extended her goal streak to three consecutive games. She and Erika Yanke (Torrance, Calif.) led the team with two shots each. 
  • After scoring a goal and adding an assist in the previous game against Rockford, sophomore Miriam Carreno (San Antonio, Texas) stepped into goal for the Warriors and made nine saves in 90 minutes.
  • WLC finished with four corner kicks.

  • Coxon's five-goal performance pushed her season total to 11 goals. She finished with a game-high nine shots, including seven shots on goal and an assist in 59 minutes.
  • The Stars' defense kept the Warriors to only seven shots and one shot on goal, including one shot in the first half.

  • The Warriors return to the pitch tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Mount Mary (1-8-0) for a non-conference match at 1:00 p.m. WLC is 7-0 against Mount Mary since 2000, including a 10-0 victory last season. Links to live stats and video will be available for the game at WLCSports.com.
