Warriors Smother Inferno, 6-0

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's soccer team defeated the Alverno Inferno 6-0 Saturday afternoon at Alverno Soccer Field. The win marks the third straight for the Warriors as Helen Joyce (De Pere, Wis.) tallied a hat trick and now ranks third in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with nine goals.

  • Miriam Carreno (San Antonio, Texas) put the visitors on the board in the 26' when the ball was played through the defense by Kendra Schumacher (Little Chute, Wis.) and Carreno beat the keeper one-on-one to the left side.
  • Joyce pushed the WLC lead to two goals in the 36' when she shot a ball from just inside the box off the right post and into the back of the net.
  • Joyce tallied her second goal of the afternoon in the 50' when she took a pass from Schumacher and beat the goalie to the left side, giving the Warriors a 3-0 lead just after halftime.
  • Joyce completed her hat trick at the 62:43 mark when she gathered a pass from Carreno and fired past the goalie, pushing the Green and White's lead to 4-0.
  • In the 70' minute, Joyce fed Ella Metten (Greenville, Wis.) with a pass who chipped the goalie to the left side of the net, increasing the WLC lead to 5-0 with just under 20 minutes remaining in the contest.
  • Kayla Mitchell (Green Bay, Wis.) scored the sixth and final goal for the Warriors in the 79' when she attempted a shot that was blocked, gathered her own rebound and then beat the keeper.

  • Joyce led the Warriors with a season-high 14 shots, including seven on goal. The senior scored three times and registered an assist.
  • Schumacher attempted three shots on target and dished out two assists to increase her assists total to a NACC-leading eight on the season.
  • Mitchell and Metten each registered a goal, while Carreno tallied a goal and an assist.
  • Rosanna Mazzulla (Melrose Park, Ill.) earned the win in net, making one save in a shutout performance. Mazzulla has now allowed five goals in 393 minutes of action and boasts a goals against average average of 1.14.
  • The Warriors out-shot the Inferno 42-3 in the contest, including a 19-1 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran shutout Alverno for the fourth straight time and won its eighth straight overall against the cross-town conference foe. 

  • Shaye Wolfe led Alverno with three shots, including the lone shot on frame.
  • Allison Weick suffered the loss in goal, allowing six goals while making 13 saves.

  • The Warriors look for their fourth straight win Wednesday as they host Aurora at Warriors Soccer Field. The Spartans (1-4-1, 0-1-0 NACC) fell to Illinois Tech in their conference opener Wednesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm. Live stats and video will be available at WLCSports.com.
