MILWAUKEE - Senior forward Maggie Smith (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) scored two goals and assisted on another in a 3-0 win for the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's soccer team over Alverno Saturday at Warrior Field. The Warriors improved to 4-8-2 and are an even 2-2-2 against Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference competition.
Just nine minutes into the game, play was stopped due to lightning and the delay lasted an hour and 11 minutes. The Warriors wasted no time scoring once play resumed, as Smith took a nice feed from Emily Sowinski (Waukesha, Wis./West) and rolled it past the goalkeeper into the left corner of the net just two and a half minutes later to put WLC in front 1-0.
Smith returned the favor late in the first half, crossing a ball in close to Sowinski who struck for her first goal of the season and gave the Warriors a 2-0 advantage.
Smith capped the scoring in the 73rd minute as she put home a pass from Rebecca Schnell (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) for her fourth goal of the season and a 3-0 lead.
The Warriors doubled up on the Inferno (6-6-0, 1-5-0 NACC) in shots, 14-7. Smith, Sowinski, and Mandy Schnell (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) led the Warriors with three shots apiece. Nava Moniriarani and Elizabeth Terrones attempted two shots apiece for Alverno.
WLC goalkeeper Kate Gucinski (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) grabbed four saves. Samantha Robinson also made four saves for Alverno.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-8-2, 2-2-2 NACC) returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Edgewood (9-2-1, 5-0-0 NACC) at 7 p.m. at Warrior Field.
