MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 victory over Beloit in non-conference action Friday night at Warrior Field.
After controlling possession for much of the opening half, the Warriors broke through in the 34th minute. Junior Heather Nielsen's (Wildwood, Fla./Villages) laser shot from the top of the box hit the crossbar, but fellow junior Sarah Luebke (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) was right there to bury the rebound and give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Nielsen was credited with the assist.
WLC netted its second goal in the 64th minute, when sophomore Katie Bentz (Cambridge, Minn/St. Croix Lutheran) scored unassisted from just inside the box.
Junior goalkeeper Kate Gucinski (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) made eight saves in the shutout. Each team took 15 shots in the game. Luebke led the Warriors with three shots on goal.
Felicia Carlson led Beloit (0-1-0) with four shots. Goalkeeper Alex Spirov made eight saves.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-0-0) has a quick turnaround as they return to Warrior Field for a 1 p.m. game Saturday against Eureka (0-0-0).
