Polar Bears Shoot Past Warriors In Home Opener

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team opened its 2019-2020 home slate against Ohio Northern at the Paul F. Knueppel Classic Friday night. The visiting Polar Bears downed the Warriors 67-43 in the second game of the classic inside the Recreation Complex.

  • The Warriors tied the game at 4-4 three minutes into the first quarter on a pair of layups from sophomore Jenna Mace (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) and junior Amanda Brug (Sturtevant, Wis.), but the Polar Bears scored 10 unanswered and closed the quarter with a 17-8 lead.
  • Ohio Northern opened the second quarter with another 10-0 stretch, before a pair of free throws from junior Nikita Conroy (West Allis, Wis.) stopped the run with four minutes to play in the half. Senior Kelly Tramburg (Fall River, Wis.) and Brug scored layups before the half, with the Polar Bears holding a 36-15 lead.
  • The Warriors offense found a spark in the third quarter with sophomore Maria Murray (Middleton, Wis.) and Brug finding success with midrange jumpers. ONU closed the quarter with six of the final eight points to maintain a 22-point lead at 52-30.
  • Midway through the fourth quarter, sophomore Kalies Birkholz (Watertown, Wis.) knocked down a triple, starting a 5-0 run for the Warriors. Freshman Julia Holtz (Lowell, Wis.) came off the bench with a couple minutes left and scored the final four points for WLC, knocking down a jumper from the corner and a jumper in transition to close out a 67-43 defeat.

  • Brug paced the Warriors with 10 points, going 5-of-7 from the field for her fourth straight double-digit scoring game. Kelly Tramburg and Murray each added six as WLC shot 34 percent from the floor (18-of-53). The Warriors offense improved drastically in the second half, shooting 46.1 percent (12-of-26).
  • Brug led the way on the glass as well, finishing with six rebounds and three on the offensive end. Sophomore Ally Gough (Horicon, Wis.) finished with a team-high three assists.

  • Abby Weeks led the Polar Bears with 15 points, while Emily Mescher and Lexi Jacobs added 14 and 13, respectively. Ohio Northern shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the floor and finished 10-of-13 from the free throw line.

  • The Warriors return to action tomorrow afternoon for their second game of the 2019 Paul F. Knueppel Classic, hosting No. 10 DePauw (4-0) with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The Tigers were 60-55 winners earlier tonight over No. 17 UW-Oshkosh.
