Women's Basketball Runs Past Spartans For Sixth Straight Win

AURORA, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – Powered by a 23-8 third quarter, the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team defeated the Aurora Spartans 75-50 Saturday afternoon inside Thornton Gymnasium. Jen Dowden (Bonduel, Wis.) scored a game-high 21 points, including 16 in the first half, and Maddy Elrod (Conifer, Colo.) added 14 second-half points to lead the Warriors.

  • Maddie Cruz (New Berlin, Wis.) opened the scoring for WLC, connecting on a triple from the top of the key, then stole the ball and fed Kelly Tramburg (Fall River, Wis.) for a transition layup, giving the visitors a 5-2 lead early in the opening quarter.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran held an 8-7 lead, then Tierney Woodward (Poynette, Wis.) came off the bench and connected on a triple from the right wing, extending the Wisconsin Lutheran lead to four and forcing AU to take a timeout with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Aurora responded with an 8-2 run, but Dowden collected an offensive rebound and converted the ensuing putback to give WLC a 19-18 lead after the opening quarter.
  • Dowden scored five straight points, then Amanda Brug (Sturtevant, Wis.) converted a free throw to push the Warriors' lead to 10 points with just over four minutes to play in the half.
  • Aurora scored six quick points to cut the WLC lead to four, but Dowden grabbed an offensive rebound and converted two free throws to give the Warriors a 38-32 lead at the half.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran came storming out of the gates in the third quarter, connecting on seven of its first 11 attempts in the second half, out-scoring AU 19-2 over the first seven minutes, including eight points from Maddy Elrod. The Warriors held a 56-37 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the third period.
  • Dowden converted two free throws and Jenna Mace (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) converted a driving layup to push the WLC lead to 21 points, 61-40, after three quarters of play.
  • Maddy Elrod tallied the first six points of the fourth quarter for WLC, then Mace buried a triple from the right corner, extending Wisconsin Lutheran's lead to 72-44 with four minutes remaining.
  • Kelly Tramburg connected on a triple at the 3:40 mark to extend the lead to 29 points, their largest lead of the afternoon, and WLC stifled the Spartans over the final three minutes of the contest to claim the 75-50 victory.

  • The Spartans shot 34.9 percent (15-of-43) from the field and converted 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the free throw line.
