Warriors Run Away From Sabercats In Non-Conference Action

WATERTOWN, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Behind 12 points apiece from Jen Dowden (Bonduel, Wis.), Maddy Elrod (Conifer, Colo.) and Tierney Woodward (Poynette, Wis.), the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team defeated the Maranatha Sabercats 71-42 Thursday night inside MBU Gymnasium. The Warriors forced 26 turnovers and shot 47.2 percent from the floor en route to the runaway win.

  • Both teams struggled to gain momentum in the opening five minutes of the contest, with the Warriors holding a 6-5 lead.
  • After a Maranatha basket gave the hosts a 7-6 lead, Jenna Mace (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) scored three straight points, then Woodward connected on a triple from the top of the key to give WLC a 12-7 lead, forcing MBU to take a timeout with two minutes left in the opening quarter.
  • Dowden scored four straight points, then Lexi Reinke (Bonduel, Wis.) knocked down a triple from the top of the key to push the Wisconsin Lutheran lead to 11 points with just over 3:30 to play in the opening half.
  • The Warriors closed out the second quarter with seven straight points, including four from Dowden, to take a 35-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • Reinke opened the second half with a triple from the left wing, then Maddie Cruz (New Berlin, Wis.) connected on a three-pointer on the following possession to push the Warriors' lead to 22 points just two minutes into the third quarter.
  • Woodward connected on another triple, then Ally Gough (Horicon, Wis.) knocked down a corner three to send the Warriors into the fourth quarter with a 63-29 advantage.
  • Morgan Tramburg (Fall River, Wis.) converted a layup, then Taylor Beadles (Stevens Point, Wis.) connected from beyond the three-point line to push the WLC lead to 34 points with just over five minutes remaining.
  • Nikita Conroy (West Allis, Wis.) converted two free throws in the final minutes of the contest as WLC tallied the 71-42 victory.

  • Dowden, Elrod, and Wooward tallied 12 points apiece while Reinke added eight points and six assists.
  • Amanda Brug (Sturtevant, Wis.) scored five points and pulled down six rebounds off the bench.
  • WLC shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field and converted 75 percent (12-of-16) from the free throw line.
  • The Warriors forced 26 turnovers and converted them into 30 points.

  • Callie Morrison led MBU with 18 points, six steals, and five assists, while Kelsey Johnson scored 10 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
  • MBU shot 36 percent (18-of-50) from the floor and were held to 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from three-point range.
