Warriors Run Away From Sabres Behind Big Second Quarter

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – Powered by a 23-0 run over eight minutes in the second quarter, the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team defeated the visiting Marian Sabres 79-43 Wednesday night inside the Recreation Complex. The Warriors out-scored the visitors 28-4 in the second quarter en route to their 11th straight victory to open the season and 21st straight inside the Recreation Complex.

  • The Warriors jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead after a three-point play from Maddy Elrod (Conifer, Colo.) and a triple from Maddie Cruz (New Berlin, Wis.).
  • WLC held a 7-6 lead, then scored six straight points, capped off by a steal and layup from Lexi Reinke (Bonduel, Wis.) to take a 13-6 lead with four minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
  • Jen Dowden (Bonduel, Wis.) buried a jumper as time expired in the first quarter, putting the Warriors ahead 20-14 after the opening period.
  • Dowden connected on another jumper then Tierney Woodward (Poynette, Wis.) buried a corner triple to extend the WLC lead to 25-14 with seven minutes left in the half.
  • Cruz converted a layup on a back-door pass from Dowden, then Dowden scored four straight points to push the Wisconsin Lutheran lead to 17 points, 31-14, with 5:14 to play in the half, forcing Marian to take a timeout.
  • The Warriors did not slow down after the timeout, scoring 12 straight points over the next three minutes to extend their lead to 43-14 with just two minutes left in the half.
  • Woodward connected on her third triple of the half, then Kelly Tramburg (Fall River, Wis.) converted a layup to send the Warriors into the locker room at halftime with a 48-18 lead.
  • Amanda Brug (Sturtevant, Wis.) converted a layup and Woodward knocked down a three from the right wing, giving WLC a 59-22 lead with just over two minutes left in the third quarter.
  • Woodward buried her fifth triple of the game as the clock ran out in the third to put the Warriors in front 66-27 after three.
  • Kalies Birkholz (Watertown, Wis.) and Nikita Conroy (West Allis, Wis.) converted free throws in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter as the Warriors maintained a 69-36 lead with just over five minues to play in the contest.
  • Maria Murray (Middleton, Wis.) grabbed an offensive rebound and scored the following layup, then Conroy scored a fastbreak layup to push the WLC lead to 73-38 with three minutes remaining.
  • Wynonah Filla (Osseo, Wis.) and Ally Gough (Horicon, Wis.) converted layups in the final minute as the Warriors earned the 79-43 triumph.

  • Dowden and Woodward paced the Warriors with 15 points apiece while Brug added eight points and pulled down four rebounds.
  • Elrod grabbed a team-high nine rebounds while scoring four points and Cruz and Tramburg each chipped in seven points.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran owned a 39-34 advantage on the backboards and pulled down 13 offensive rebounds.
  • The Warriors out-scored Marian 48-20 in the paint and 30-13 in points off turnovers.
  • WLC shot 50.8 percent (32-of-63) from the field and got 43 points from its bench in the victory.
  • The victory marked the 21st straight inside the confines of the Recreation Complex.

  • Rachel Serchen scored 12 points to lead Marian while Paris Harris added eight points and five rebounds.
  • The Sabres were held to 28.3 percent (15-of-53) shooting from the floor and just 8.3 percent (1-for-12) from deep.
