Warriors Lead Wire-To-Wire In Win Over Montclair St.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – Jen Dowden (Bonduel, Wis.) scored a season-high 26 points and Lexi Reinke (Bonduel, Wis.) added a career-high 14 to lead the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team to a 58-47 win over Montclair St. Wednesday afternoon in its first game of the St. Pete Classic inside Eckerd's McArthur Center.

  • The Warriors busted out to a 7-0 lead over the Red Hawks behind five straight from Maddy Elrod (Conifer, Colo.) and a layup from Lexi Reinke (Bonduel, Wis.). Monclair St. followed with four straight and would get no closer through the end of the first quarter as Wisconsin Lutheran led 12-6 after one.
  • WLC slowly went on an 11-3 run over the first six-and-a-half minutes of the second quarter and led by as many as 14 points with 3:21 left. The Red Hawks scored five straight to pull within nine and trailed by eight to the Warriors at halftime, 28-20.
  • MSU came as close as five points early in the third quarter at 30-25, but Wisconsin Lutheran rattled off 11 straight, including nine from Dowden to grow the lead to a game-high 16 points at the 4:54 mark of the third quarter. WLC carried a 13-point advantage into the fourth quarter, 48-35.
  • Both teams traded points over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and Montclair St. came within 10 at 51-41 with 4:58 left. Wisconsin Lutheran matched its game-high 16-point lead at 58-42 with 2:02 to play. The Red Hawks scored the final five points of the game but the Warriors came away with the 11-point win.

  • Dowden led all scorers with a season-high 26 points, including 21 in the second half on 7-for-12 shooting. She added five steals. Reinke followed with a career-high 14 points and eight rebounds on 6-for-9 shooting.
  • The Warriors shot 43.8 percent (21-for-48) for the game, including 41.7 percent (5-for-12) from three-point range. It was the fourth straight game of at least 40 percent from beyond the arc.
  • WLC held a slim 32-29 rebounding edge over MSU and scored 17 points off turnovers.
  • The Green and White extended their program-best record start to 8-0 after winning their first-ever meeting over the Red Hawks.

  • Domonique Wirsing scored 11 points and Alex McKinnon added 10 for Montclair St., which was was held to just 34.9 percent (15-for-43) shooting from the floor and 26.7 percent (4-for-15) from three-point land.
  • The Red Hawks, who have qualified for six straight NCAA Tournaments including two Sweet 16s and a Final Four, turned the ball over 17 times.
