Elrod's Double-Double Sparks Warriors' Big Win Over Falcons

MEQUON, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team defeated the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons 57-33 inside R. John Buuck Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. Maddy Elrod (Conifer, Colo.) scored a team-high 15 points and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Warriors, who out-rebounded the Falcons 44-27 and held the hosts to just 20.4 percent shooting.

  • Both teams struggled out of the gates, with the Warriors holding a 6-3 lead five minutes into the first quarter after a three-point play from Jen Dowden (Bonduel, Wis.) and a corner triple from Kelly Tramburg (Fall River, Wis.).
  • WLC carried an 11-5 lead into the second quarter after six straight points to end the quarter, capped off by a jumper from Maddy Elrod (Conifer, Colo.) that just beat the first quarter horn.
  • After CUW cut the lead to just three points, the Warriors scored six straight to extend their lead to 19-10 with three minutes to play in the half.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran took a 21-11 lead into the halftime break, holding the hosts to just 17.4 percent shooting from the floor while allowing only four made baskets.
  • The Falcons held WLC scoreless for the first four minutes of the second half and cut the Warriors lead to five, but Elrod and Jenna Mace (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) tallied back-to-back baskets, then Lexi Reinke (Bonduel, Wis.) converted two free throws to push the Wisconsin Lutheran lead to 11 points with four minutes remaining in the third quarter.
  • The two teams traded free throws in the remaining minutes of the third and Elrod converted a layup with just under 0:30 seconds to play in the quarter, keeping the WLC lead at 11 heading into the final period.
  • Dowden opened the fourth quarter with two straight baskets, increasing the Wisconsin Lutheran lead to 15 points, then Elrod added a basket of her own to extend the Warriors lead to 41-24, forcing CUW to take a timeout with 7:50 to play.
  • Tramburg and Elrod converted back-to-back layups to push the WLC lead to 21 points with just under four minutes to play in the contest, then Tierney Woodward (Poynette, Wis.) buried a triple from the top of the key to give WLC a game-high 26-point advantage.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran milked the clock in the final minutes of the game, taking the 57-33 victory.

  • Elrod led the Warriors with a double-double of 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds while Dowden added 13 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
  • Tramburg added 12 points with five boards and Reinke stuffed the stat sheet with nine rebounds, five assists, and four points.
  • WLC shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) from the field and converted 75 percent (12-of-16) from the free throw line.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran controlled the backboards, out-rebounding the hosts 44-27 and pulled down 13 offensive rebounds. The Warriors also out-scored CUW 28-12 in the paint.
  • The 24-point victory is the largest margin of victory over the Falcons since February 9, 2002, covering a span of 36 games. 

  • Emily Hafemann scored 10 points for the Falcons while Arianna Liddicoat added six points and Baylee Barker had five.
  • The Falcons were held to 20.4 percent (10-of-49) shooting from the floor and 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from three-point range.
