Warriors Open Knueppel Classic With 67-36 Victory Over Belles

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team forced 33 turnovers and held the visiting Saint Mary's Belles to just 13 second-half points en route to a 67-36 victory Friday night in its season opener at the Paul F. Knueppel Classic. Jen Dowden (Bonduel, Wis.) led the way with 18 points as the Warriors shot 40 percent from the floor.

  • Kelly Tramburg (Fall River, Wis.) opened the scoring in the contest, connecting on a triple from the top of the key, then Maddy Elrod (Conifer, Colo.) converted a layup to give WLC a 5-2 lead.
  • The Belles held a 6-5 advantage, but the Warriors scored nine straight points to take a 14-6 lead with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter.
  • SMC responded with a 5-0 run of its own, but Tierney Woodward (Poynette, Wis.) buried a three-pointer from the top of the key to put the Warriors back up by six.
  • After a quick four points from Saint Mary's, Elrod pushed the Warriors' lead back to six points after four straight free throws, then Woodward hit her third triple of the first half to push the WLC lead to nine.
  • Jenna Mace (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) scored four straight points in the final two minutes of play to give the Warriors a 35-23 lead at the halftime break.
  • WLC opened the second half with six straight points, extending its lead to 18 points with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.
  • Mace and Maddie Cruz (New Berlin, Wis.) registered back-to-back layups, then Dowden connected on a triple at the end of the quarter to put the Warriors ahead 52-26 headed into the final period of play.
  • Amanda Brug (Sturtevant, Wis.) converted a layup, then Ally Gough (Horicon, Wis.) connected on a triple from the top of the key to push the Warriors' lead to 26 with just under three minutes to play in the contest.
  • Taylor Beadles (Stevens Point, Wis.) buried her first two career triples to close out the contest, with WLC taking the 67-36 victory.

  • Dowden led the Warriors with a game-high 18 points while pulling down five rebounds and tallying five assists and four steals.
  • Elrod added 12 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line and five rebounds, while Woodward chipped in nine points off of three triples.
  • WLC shot 40 percent (24-of-60) from the floor and shot a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe.
  • The Warriors forced 33 turnovers in the contest while recording 16 steals.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran scored 37 points off turnovers in the win. 

  • Giavanna Paradiso led SMC with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Sophie Koeppl added six points and eight boards.
