Warriors Surge Past Muskies In Second Half

MILWAUKEE - After trailing by four at halftime, the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team out-scored Lakeland 39-20 in the second half en route to its 11th straight victory, a 58-43 triumph Tuesday night at the Recreation Complex.

Both teams got off to a slow start in a first half that featured six ties and three lead changes. Lakeland (6-11, 3-9 NACC) went on an 8-0 run over the span of 3:52 to take its biggest lead at 23-17 with 49 seconds to go in the opening period. Melanie Laete's (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) jumper with 35 seconds to go in the half cut the Muskies' advantage to 23-19 at halftime.

The Warriors (12-3, 10-1 NACC) shot 37.5 percent in the opening half and held Lakeland to 32.1 percent shooting. WLC also committed 13 turnovers in the opening half and was 0-for-5 from three-point range.

WLC played much better basketball in the second half and used a decisive 10-0 run over the course of 1:59 -- capped by a three-pointer from Melissa Klemm (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) -- to grab a 38-30 lead with 13:31 to play. Lakeland battled back to within four with 9:35 left, but the Warriors answered with a 9-0 run -- finished off by a three from Rachel Hoft (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) -- to take a 51-38 lead with 4:01 remaining and put the game away.

The Warriors shot 57.1 percent in the second half and were 4-for-6 from beyond the arc while committing only five turnovers. Kristen Schulz (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) led WLC with 16 points and seven rebounds in the second half on her way to a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double in a row and 11th of the season.

Laete posted her second consecutive double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Christel Frey (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) added nine points and Klemm served up a game-high seven assists.

Leah Eisner paced Lakeland with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Vashia Gordon chipped in with 11 points.

The Warriors out-shot the Muskies 48.1 percent to 34.0 percent and held a 43-27 edge on the glass. WLC out-scored Lakeland 38-24 in the paint and 16-8 in points off turnovers.
