MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team started off strong and never looked back in its 75-28 win over Marian (3-10, 3-5 NACC) Thursday night at the Recreation Complex. With the win, the Warriors (8-3, 6-1 NACC) extended their winning streak to seven games.
The Warriors started the game on a 16-0 run, not allowing a Marian basket until 13:45 left in the first half. WLC did not take its foot off the gas pedal, ending the half on a 28-10 run. The Warriors powered through the halftime whistle with a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Bethany Unkefer (Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) giving them a 44-10 halftime lead. Unkefer scored 14 points off the bench in the contest on 5-of-6 shooting.
Kristen Schulz (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) anchored the first-half attack, recording a double-double in her first 18 minutes of play with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Schulz finished with a game-high 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field, and totaled 17 rebounds.
There was no let down for WLC in the second half, as it out-scored Marian 31-18. After trading baskets for the first eight minutes, the Warriors closed the game on a 16-7 run. Wisconsin Lutheran had great success inside as it out rebounded Marian 53-26 for the game, which helped lead to out-scoring the Sabres 24-2 on second-chance points.
Melissa Klemm (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) ran the offense very smoothly, contributing 14 points, shooting 4-of-7 from the three-point line. She also added six rebounds and four assists.
Marian struggled on the offensive end, shooting just 20.8 percent from the field for the game. Sarah Albert led the Sabres with seven points.
Wisconsin Lutheran will host NACC opponent Aurora (6-7, 5-3 NACC) Saturday at 4:15 p.m. at the Recreation Complex. Live audio, stats, and video will be available online at wlcsports.com.
