Mahsem, Warriors Shutout Spartans In Tournament Opener

MONTGOMERY, Ill. ( – Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis.) pitched a complete-game shutout and Ileana Fierro (Chicago, Ill.) drove in two runs as the sixth-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team defeated the third-seeded Aurora Spartans 3-0 in the first game of the 2019 NACC Softball Tournament Thursday afternoon at Spartan Athletic Park. The win was WLC's second all-time in the NACC Tournament and fourth all-time over the Spartans.

  • The Warriors threatened in the second inning when Davina Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill.) and Jules Morini (Chicago, Ill.) collected consecutive two-out singles, but WLC was unable to score.
  • Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) led off the third with a single to center and moved to second after a sacrifice bunt from Melissa Ericson (Lisle, Ill.) The Spartans walked Mahsem to put runners on second base, then Karah Ritacco (Chicago, Ill.) ripped a single to center to load the bases.
  • Fierro followed with a single back up the middle, plating Wilson and Rebecca Foster (Spring, Texas), who pinch ran for Mahsem, giving Wisconsin Lutheran a 2-0 lead.
  • Gutierrez reached on an error to open the third inning and Megan Belongia (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) pinch ran for her, then moved to second base after a sacrifice bunt from Morini. Wilson slapped a single through the left side of the infield to score Belongia and increase WLC's lead to 3-0 after four innings.
  • Mahsem allowed just one baserunner over the final three innings as the Warriors earned a 3-0 victory.
  • Wilson, Mahsem, and Fierro each collected two hits while Fierro drove in two runs.
  • Mahsem earned the win in the circle, scattering seven hits while striking out four.

  • Heather Vetter led the Spartans with two hits while Stephanie Renner suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs over four innings.

  • With the win, the Warriors face the second-seeded MSOE Raiders (20-10) at approximately 6:45 p.m. tonight. The Raiders earned a first-round bye in the 2019 NACC Tournament. Live stats and video will be available at
