Softball Clinches NACC Tournament Berth Following Senior Day Sweep

MILWAUKEE ( – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team clinched its second straight NACC Tournament berth after a Senior Day sweep over Concordia Chicago Sunday at Neumann Family Field. The Warriors held off a late seventh-inning rally for a 3-2 victory in the opener before taking the winner-take-all nightcap, 4-1. Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis.) became the program's all-time hits leader following her game one first-inning single.

  • Mahsem's single to right center field in the first inning moved her to the top of the career hits record in WLC history with 160.
  • CUC threatened with a runner in scoring position in both the second and third inning, but Mahsem escaped in the circle to keep the score at 0-0.
  • WLC broke through the scoring column in the fourth inning when Mahsem started the inning with a triple and scored on a throwing error. The Warriors tacked on another run in the frame on an RBI single from Ellen Davis (Greendale, Wis.) to plate Rebecca Foster (Spring, Texas) and give WLC a 2-0 lead.
  • Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) began the fifth inning with a walk and eventually scored on an RBI single from Karah Ritacco (Chicago, Ill.) to lift Wisconsin Lutheran's advantage to 3-0 after five innings.
  • The Cougars trimmed the lead to just a single run after a one-out, two-run home run from Kristen Landon in the seventh inning. Mahsem retired the next two batters to force a winner-take-all nightcap.
  • Mahsem improved to 12-10 in the circle after allowing just two runs on five hits in the complete game effort.
  • Mahsem and Ritacco each recorded two hits to lead the Green and White's offense.

  • The Warriors struck early with a pair of runs in the first. Melissa Ericson (Lisle, Ill.) and Mahsem had one-out hits, and Ericson scored on a CUC error. Mahsem later came around to touch the plate after an RBI single from Ellen Davis to put WLC up 2-0.
  • With two outs in the second, Foster scored on a wild pitch and Ritacco singled in Ericson to double the Warriors' lead to 4-0.
  • The Cougars' offense did not see a runner reach scoring position through the first six innings of the game as Jessie Rago (Elgin, Ill.) controlled the game in the circle for WLC.
  • CUC's bats came alive in the seventh with a leadoff single followed by a double. Mahsem settled in to limit the damage to just one run and secure the conference tournament bid for WLC.
  • Ericson went 2-for-2 in the nightcap to lead the Warriors. Rago improved to 8-5 on the rubber as she allowed no runs on four hits with six strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Mahsem closed the final 2.1 innings of the contest. Between games, WLC honored seniors Mahsem, Megan Belongia (Ashwaubenon, Wis.), and Brea Johnson (Cumberland, Wis.).

  • Five different Cougars recorded a hit in the opener, highlighted by Landon's two-run blast. Kate Roberts suffered the loss in the circle as she allowed two runs on four hits in 3.1 innings.
  • Marita Van Dyke allowed two earned runs in 6.0 innings in the circle for the Cougars. Van Dyke recorded two of CUC's six hits in the contest.

  • The sixth-seeded Warriors play the opening game of double-elimination NACC Tournament against host and third-seeded Aurora (26-14, 16-6 NACC) Thursday at Spartan Athletic Park in Montgomery, Illinois.
