Softball Suffers Saturday Sweep To Sabres

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team suffered two losses to the host Marian Sabres Saturday afternoon at Smith Field. The Warriors dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 loss in eight innings in the opener, before falling in game two 12-3 in five innings.

  • After a scoreless first inning, the Warriors got on the board in the second when Melissa Ericson (Lisle, Ill.) launched a solo home run, her second of the season, to give WLC a 1-0 lead.
  • Both teams struggled to find momentum in the contest until the fifth when Ericson scored after a Marian error, pushing the lead to 2-0 in favor of the Warriors.
  • The Sabres responded in the fifth with a walk and a single, then a three-run home run from Peyton Loesch that put the hosts ahead 3-2.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran tied the contest in the seventh after Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) doubled, then scored after an error by the Sabres to even the score at 3-3.
  • After holding WLC scoreless in the eighth, Marian used a walk and a single to put its first two runners on. MU took advantage of a Warriors error on a bunt that allowed the winning run to score from second, giving MU the 4-3 victory in extra innings.
  • Wilson and Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis.) led the way for WLC with two hits each, while Ericson tallied the lone RBI.
  • Mahsem suffered the loss in the circle, allowing three earned runs over 7.0 innings.

  • The Warriors jumped out to an early lead in the first inning after a double steal by Wilson and Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) that scored Wilson, then Mahsem singled to drive in Moberg.
  • Ericson followed with an RBI single to drive in Mahsem, pushing WLC's lead to 3-0 after a half inning.
  • The Sabres responded with seven hits in the bottom of the first inning, tallying eight runs to take an 8-3 lead after one.
  • Marian added three more runs in the second inning after two hits to begin the inning. A pair of RBI singles extended the hosts lead to 11-3 after two innings.
  • The Sabres opened the third with four straight hits, scoring one run and increasing their lead to 12-3.
  • WLC was unable to put any runners on base in the fourth and fifth frames and fell 12-3 in the second game of the day.
  • Five different Warriors collected hits in game two, while Mahsem and Ericson drove in runs.
  • Mahsem suffered the loss in game two, allowing three earned runs over 3.2 innings in relief.

  • Three different Sabres tallied multiple hits in the opener, while Loesch led MU with three RBI.
  • Paige Rauhut earned the win in the circle, allowing just one earned run over 8.0 innings.

  • The Warriors return home Monday when they host Aurora. The Spartans (19-13, 11-5 NACC) swept Dominican Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Neumann Family Field.
