Warriors Swept By NACC-Leading Falcons

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team suffered a sweep to the NACC-leading Concordia Wisconsin Falcons Friday afternoon at Neumann Family Field in its first home games since March 31. The Warriros squandered a three-run lead in the seventh inning in game one before falling 9-4 in game two.

  • CUW took a 1-0 lead in the opener with a double followed by an RBI single and led 1-0 after one inning.
  • The Warriors loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second inning after walks from Ileana Fierro (Chicago, Ill.) and Ellen Davis (Greendale, Wis.). The hosts tied the contest at 1-1 after an RBI groundout from Megan Belongia (Ashwaubenon, Wis.), but were only able to score one run in the inning.
  • WLC took the lead in the fourth inning after Fierro was plunked to open the inning, then scored after Melissa Ericson (Lisle, Ill.) laid down a bunt and the ball was thrown into right field, scoring Fierro and allowing Ericson to reach third.
  • A wild pitch scored Ericson to put Wisconsin Lutheran up 3-1, then Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) ripped a single up the middle later in the inning to score Belongia, who reached earlier in the inning on an error. WLC led 4-1 after four innings.
  • The hosts held a 4-1 lead heading into the seventh, but the visitors used five hits and an error to score four runs in the frame.
  • Wilson singled to leadoff the bottom of the seventh, but the Warriors were unable to tie the contest and fell 5-4 in the opener.
  • Wilson tallied the only two hits for WLC while Fierro scored two runs.
  • Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis.) suffered the loss in game one, allowing just one earned run over 7.0 innings while striking out six.

  • The Falcons opened game two with a single and a stolen base, then a sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • CUW added three runs in the third after three straight singles to open the inning, then a sacrifice fly followed by an RBI single to take a 4-0 lead after three.
  • The Warriors got two runs back in the fourth when Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) led off the inning with a single, then Fierro was hit by a pitch, followed by an RBI single from Karah Ritacco (Chicago, Ill.) that scored Moberg. After Ritacco's hit, Davis followed with a single to drive in Fierro and cut CUW's lead to two runs.
  • Concordia Wisconsin put up four runs in the sixth after a bases-clearing double and a sacrifice fly to push its lead to six runs.
  • The Warriors responded with two runs in the sixth after an RBI groundout from Davis and an RBI single from Davina Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill.), but still trailed 8-4 after six innings.
  • CUW added one more run in the seventh after a bases-loaded single, but Jessie Rago (Elgin, Ill.) limited the damage to one run.
  • Ericson led off the seventh with a double and Belongia followed with a walk, but the Warriors were unable to score any runs and fell 9-4 in game two.
  • Ritacco led WLC with two hits in game two while Davis drove in two runs.
  • Rago suffered the loss in game two, allowing nine earned runs over 7.0 innings.

  • Molly O'Connell led the Falcons in game one with a hit and two runs batted in while Maddie Zazas added two hits.
  • Gina Followell earned the win in the circle, allowing two earned runs over 7.0 innings and striking out nine.
  • O'Connell collected three hits in game two while Heather Renard drove in three runs.
  • Nicki Becker earned the win in game two, allowing two earned runs over 4.0 innings.

  • The Warriors are back on the road tomorrow when they take on Marian. The Sabres (17-11, 9-5 NACC) swept Lakeland Friday in Fond du Lac. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at WLCSports.com.
