Softball Sweeps Regents For Fourth Straight Win

ROCKFORD, Ill. ( – Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis.) tallied four hits and earned both wins in the circle as the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team swept the Rockford Regents Saturday afternoon at Smith Athletic Field. Mahsem struck out nine batters while allowing just three hits in the opener. She then pitched 6.1 shutout innings in relief as the Warriors came back in game two for a 6-3 victory.

  • After three scoreless innings, the Warriors got on the scoreboard first Megan Belongia (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) opened the inning with a single, then advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Mahsem followed with a single and a steal to put runners on second and third. Ileana Fierro (Chicago, Ill.) hit a sharp grounder to second base, scoring Belongia to put WLC up 1-0.
  • The Warriors added another run in the seventh after Mahsem opened the inning with a single, then Ellen Davis (Greendale, Wis.) ripped a single to right center field to score Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.), who pinch ran for Mahsem.
  • Rockford threatened in the bottom of the seventh with two straight singles, but Mahsem induces a strikeout with runners on second and third to preserve the 2-0 victory.
  • Davis and Mahsem each collected two hits in the opener while Fierro and Davis drove in runs.

  • Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) opened game two with a single up the middle and moved to second after a sacrifice bunt, then Mahsem drove in Wilson with a single to center field, giving WLC an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Regents responded in the bottom half of the inning with three hits, scoring three runs and taking a 3-1 lead after one inning.
  • Neither team could find momentum in the following innings until the fifth when Melissa Ericson (Lisle, Ill.) led off the inning with a pinch-hit double, then scored after a groundout from Wilson, trimming the RU lead to one.
  • Davis reached base on an error in the sixth inning, then scored after Davina Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill.) smoked a double to left field, tying the contest at 3-3.
  • Moberg drew a walk and Wilson reached base on a bunt single to load the bases, then Jules Morini (Chicago, Ill.) cleared the bases with a double to left field, giving WLC a 6-3 lead.
  • Rockford threatened again in its last at-bats with three straight hits to start the inning, but Mahsem induced a double play and fly out to give the Warriors the 6-3 victory.
