Warriors Sweep Inferno Behind 21 Hits

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – Powered by 21 hits and 12 stolen bases over two games, the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team swept the visiting Alverno Inferno in its home opener Sunday afternoon at Neumann Family Field by scores of 2-1 and 8-1. Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis.) struck out 10 batters in the opener while allowing just one run and Jessie Rago (Elgin, Ill.) followed suit with a complete game, allowing just four hits and one unearned run.

  • Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) led off the bottom of the first with a single, then stole second. Megan Belongia (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) followed with a bunt single, moving Wilson to third and then Karah Ritacco (Chicago, Ill.) ripped a single to right field, scoring Wilson and moving Belongia over to third.
  • After a Ritacco steal, Ileana Fierro (Chicago, Ill.) plated Belongia, giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead after one inning.
  • The Inferno responded with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second, but WLC held onto a 2-1 advantage.
  • Mahsem and Fierro singled in the third inning, but the Warriors were unable to drive in a run, and maintained a 2-1 lead.
  • Mahsem allowed just one baserunner over the final four innings as Wisconsin Lutheran took the 2-1 victory in game one.
  • Fierro led the Warriors with two hits while six other WLC players tallied hits. Fierro and Ritacco each drove in a run for the hosts in the opener.

  • The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Mahsem ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Ritacco from first.
  • WLC added to its lead in the second when Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) bunted down the third base line, scoring Ellen Davis (Greendale, Wis.) and beating the throw.
  • Moberg stole second and third, then scored after Wilson walked and then got into a rundown, allowing Moberg to cross the plate and gave the hosts a 3-0 lead.
  • Jules Morini (Chicago, Ill.) plated Wilson after a single to left field, pushing Wisconsin Lutheran's lead to 4-0 after two innings.
  • The Warriors executed another double steal in the third inning, allowing Fierro, who singled, to score, giving WLC a 5-0 advantage.
  • Alverno got a run back in the fourth inning after loading the bases and grounding into a double play, allowing the runner from third to score, cutting the Warriors' lead to four.
  • Moberg scored in the fourth inning after getting into a rundown after a grounder from Morini, but scored on an error from the catcher.
