Softball Suffers Sweep At Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference contests against Carthage Wednesday afternoon at the Carthage Softball Field. The Warriors fell 3-1 in the opener and then suffered a 6-1 setback in game two.

  • The Warriors were held without a baseunner until the top of the third inning when Charolette Ropas (New Berlin, Wis.) drew a walk, then Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.) pinch ran for Ropas and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) followed with a two-out walk, but WLC was unable to plate a run.
  • Ileana Fierro (Chicago, Ill.) led off the fourth inning with a walk and then Melissa Ericson (Lisle, Ill.) ripped a double down the left field line, plating Fierro and giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
  • Carthage responded in the bottom of the fourth with three runs off three hits, including a two-run homerun from Madison Kern to take a 3-1 lead after four innings.
  • Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis.) hit a double in the top of the sixth, but the Warriors were held scoreless for the remainder of the opener as Carthage took game one, 3-1.
  • Mahsem and Ericson collected the lone hits for WLC in game one.
  • Jessie Rago (Elgin, Ill.) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing three runs over 6.0 innings of work.

  • Wilson opened up game two with a leadoff single and moved to second on a sac bunt. Mahsem put the Warriors on the board with a single to right field, scoring Wilson from third after a passed ball.
  • Carthage collected five hits in the second inning and scored five runs to take a 5-1 lead after two innings.
  • After two scoreless innings, the Lady Reds added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning after a walk and two singles to push their lead to 6-1.
  • WLC collected a hit in the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to mount a comeback, falling 6-1 in game two.
  • Six different Warriors tallied hits in game two while Mahsem drove in the lone run of the game.
  • Mahsem took the loss in game two, allowing six runs over 6.0 innings, while striking out five.

  • Kern led Carthage with two hits and two RBIs, while Alexandra Millett also tallied two hits.
  • Stefanie Guercio picked up her seventh win of the season in game one, allowing just one run while striking out 12.
  • Donna Stevens went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs in game two.
  • Naomi Alonzo earned the win in game two, allowing one unearned run while tossing a complete game.

  • The Warriors return to NACC play tomorrow when they head across town to take on MSOE. The Raiders (9-5, 0-0 NACC) swept Beloit Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at MSOE Athletic Field. Live audio and stats and will be available at WLCSports.com.
