Warriors Drop NACC-Opening Series To Stars

ROSEMONT, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team dropped a pair of NACC-opening games to the Dominican Stars Sunday afternoon in Rosemont, Illinois. The Stars scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth in the opener to secure the victory and then collected 12 hits to take game two, 10-2, in five innings.

  • The Stars threatened in the first two innings, putting three runners on base, but Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis.) escaped both jams to keep the game scoreless through two innings.
  • Melissa Ericson (Lisle, Ill.) opened the third inning with a triple down the right field line and scored the first run of the contest after Brea Johnson (Cumberland, Wis.) dropped down a suicide squeeze.
  • WLC added another run in the top of the fifth inning when Ileana Fierro (Chicago, Ill.) ripped a triple to right field and Ellen Davis (Greendale, Wis.) plated her with a sacrifice bunt, putting the Warriors ahead 2-0 through five innings.
  • The Stars answered in the bottom of the fifth frame with three runs, powered by two doubles with two outs in the inning, to take a 3-2 lead after five.
  • Dominican added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, pushing its lead to 4-2 and then prevented the Warriors from making a comeback in the seventh, winning the first game 4-2.
  • Ericson and Fierro each tripled, while Davis and Johnson both drove in runs in the opener.
  • Mahsem suffered the loss in the circle, allowing three earned runs over 6.0 innings while striking out five.

  • Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) opened game two with a leadoff single, then scored after Karah Ritacco (Chicago, Ill.) smoked a double to the right center gap, giving WLC a 1-0 lead after the first half inning.
  • The Stars scored a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning after a leadoff single, followed by a sacrafice bunt and an error that allowed the runner to score from second and tie the contest at 1-1 after one.
  • DU used three hits in the bottom of the third inning to score three runs and take a 4-1 lead.
  • WLC threatened in the top of the fourth inning after Fierro singled up the middle and Maddie Lindemann (Watertown, Wis.) drew a walk, but the Warriors were unable to score and trailed 4-1 after four. 
  • Dominican added five runs in the bottom of the fourth after five different Stars collected hits in the frame, pushing its lead to 9-1 after four innings.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran responded in the fifth inning with two walks to start the frame, then Wilson tripled down the left field line to score Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.), but the Stars scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-2 victory in game two.
  • Jessie Rago (Elgin, Ill.) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing six earned runs over 3.0 innings.
  • Wilson led WLC with two hits and an RBI, while Ritacco added a double and an RBI.

  • Gabby Curan and Hannah Gordon each tallied two hits in the opener, while Cecilia Winters McCarthy drove in two runs.
  • Cat Klostermann earned the win in game one, allowing two runs over 7.0 innings.
  • Three different Stars collected three hits in game two, while Alyssa Stewart drove in three runs.
  • Allyson Dilday earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs over 5.0 innings. 

  • The Warriors travel to Kenosha Wednesday to face Carthage in non-conference action. The Lady Reds (10-4) split with MSOE Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Carthage Softball Field. Live stats will be available at WLCSports.com.
