Pitchers Dazzle As Warriors Sweep Buccaneers

LOVES PARK, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis.) and Jessie Rago (Elgin, Ill.) combined for 12 scoreless innings and 21 strikeouts as the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team swept the Beloit Buccaneers in its season opener inside Sportscore 2 Monday night. The Warriors' offense exploded for 10 runs in five innings in the opener and Rago struck out 12 batters to lead WLC to victory in game two. With the sweep, WLC starts the season with a 2-0 record for the second straight season.

  • The Warriors opened the scoring in the top of the first inning after Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) and Karah Ritacco (Chicago, Ill.) drew walks, then Mahsem ripped an RBI single up the middle to plate Wilson.
  • Ellen Davis (Greenfield, Wis.) followed with a triple to right field, scoring Ritacco and Mahsem, then Illeana Fierro (Chicago, Ill.) singled to left field in her first collegiate at-bat to drive in Davis, giving WLC a 4-0 lead after one inning.
  • Fierro singled again in the top of the third inning and moved to second after a single from Jules Morini (Chicago, Ill.). Brea Johnson (Cumberland, Wis.) singled to right field to drive in Fierro as the Warriors pushed their lead to 5-0 after three innings.
  • Davis collected her third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly, plating Ritacco, who singled to open the top of the fourth.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran extended its lead to 10-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Maddie Lindemann (Watertown, Wis.) roped a ground-rule double that scored Wilson and Melissa Ericson (Lisle, Ill.), then Davis drove home two more with a double that plated Mahsem and Ritacco.
  • Mahsem spun a gem in the opener, allowing just two hits over five innings while striking out nine Buccaneers. The senior ace also went 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a walk.
  • Davis led the offensive outburst with two extra-base hits and a career-high five RBIs. Lindemann drove in two runs while Fierro and Johnson also tallied RBIs.
  • All nine starters collected hits in the opening game, while four Warriors posted multi-hit games.

  • WLC got off to a hot start again in game two, with Wilson leading off with a single and then advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lindemann. Ritacco singled to right field to drive home Wilson to put the visitors up 1-0 in the first inning.
  • Wilson reached base again with a single and scored after Lindemann stroked a ground-rule double, giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
  • Charolette Ropas (New Berlin, Wis.) singled in the top of the fourth inning and Lindemann drew a walk, moving Avery Blauvelt (Wellman, Iowa), who pinch ran for Ropas to third. Lindemann stole second and on the steal, the catcher overthrew second base, allowing Blauvelt to score from third and Lindemann to score from second.
  • Rago pitched a two-hit, complete game while striking out 12 batters and allowing just five runners to reach base.
  • Seven different Warriors tallied hits, with Wilson collecting two singles and scoring twice.
  • Lindemann and Ritacco drove in runs for Wisconsin Lutheran in game two.

  • Stephannie Lopez and Ashley Lambert recorded the lone hits for Beloit in game one.
