WAUKESHA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College's Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis.) has been named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year, it was announced Thursday as the 2018 postseason softball awards were announced by the league office. Mahsem is the first player in program history to be tabbed conference Pitcher of the Year.
Mahsem, who was also a First Team All-NACC selection, is in the top three in the NACC in six statistical categories. The junior right-hander is tied for the league lead with 152 strikeouts, including a career-high 12 at Benedictine April 21. Mahsem boasts an impressive 1.93 earned run average in 145.1 innings pitched, both good for second in the NACC. The 2016 Second Team All-NACC honoree has tossed 16 complete games in 19 starts in the circle. In 26 total appearances, Mahsem has won 12 games and allowed just 40 earned runs. She has given up three or fewer runs in 14 starts this season.
The conference's three other major award winners were Concordia Chicago's Melissa Balkema (Position Player of the Year) and Marian's Peyton Loesch (Freshman of the Year) and Tony Draves (Coach of the Year).
The #6 seed Warriors will face #3 seed Aurora today in the first game of the 2018 NACC Tournament. The Spartans (24-14, 16-6 NACC) and Warriors split their two contests earlier this season in Aurora, Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at Alverno Field in Milwaukee.
