Battling Bishops, Bears Take Games From Warriors In Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team dropped a pair of games Monday morning against Ohio Wesleyan and Bridgewater St. (Mass.) at the Lee County Sports Complex Softball Fields as part of the 2015 Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

THE BASICS

  • Final Scores: Ohio Wesleyan 8, Wisconsin Lutheran 0 (5 Inn.); Bridgewater St. 14, Wisconsin Lutheran 2 (6 Inn.)
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (1-3), Ohio Wesleyan (2-0), Bridgewater St. (3-2)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ohio Wesleyan plated a pair of runs in the first on a two-run scoring error. 
  • The Battling Bishops tacked on two more in the second with a RBI single and steal of home.
  • OWU added single tallies to its total in the third and fifth, and two in the fourth. 
  • WLC was limited to just three hits and was hampered by four fielding errors, while Ohio Wesleyan finished with 12 hits.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Following a scoreless first frame, Bridgewater St. jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Warriors with three runs in the second and two in the third.
  • The Warriors closed to within 5-2 in the third after Kaitlyn Robison (Andalusia, Ill./Rockridge) reached safely on a bunt single, and later came around to score with Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) from a erred throw.
  • BSU added to its lead in the fourth with four runs on five hits and put up a five spot in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

QUICK HITS

  • Gacgacao, Robison, and Anna Kuske (Orange Park, Fla./Luther Preparatory) each recorded a hit for WLC against OWU. Sadie Schmidt (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) allowed five runs over 3.0 innings while striking out two to take the loss for the Warriors in the opener.
  • Four players totaled two hits each in the opener for OWU. Kayla Richard drove in two runs at the plate and pitched 4.0 scoreless innings in the circle to collect the win.
  • Robison went 2-fo-3 with a run scored to lead the Warriors at the dish. Schmidt surrendered nine runs over 4.0 innings and fanned two.
  • Courtney Leddy, Jessica Laudati, and Samantha LoPilato each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Bears, who tallied 16 hits. Iliana Rivera allowed two runs on five hits while fanning seven in 4.0 innings of work.

  • The Warriors return to the diamond first thing Tuesday morning when they take on No. 15 Montclair St. (N.J.) and Elms (Mass.). Games against the Red Hawks (2-0) and Blazers (0-4) are set for 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. CST at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
