MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team took both games of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader from Rockford Friday at Neumann Family Fields, winning 8-4 and 5-4.
Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) helped get things rolling for the Warriors in game one, belting a triple over the right fielder that allowed Brittney Blazich (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) to score, and Curtis later scored on a Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) RBI single to put the score at 2-0 after one inning.
Jessica Bjerning provided the Regents' first runs of the day, homering to left field with two outs in the third to tie the game at 2-2. Emily Sievert (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) retook the lead for WLC in the bottom of the third, sneaking home from third as Schalinske stole second base. Sievert gave the Warriors another boost in the fourth with a two-run double to make the score 5-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Blazich doubled and found herself crossing home following a Rockford error, plating Kaitlyn Robison (Andalusia, Ill./Rockridge) in the process. Sievert stayed hot into the sixth, smacking a homerun to left field to give the Warriors an 8-2 advantage.
The Regents began to mount a comeback in the seventh, scoring two early runs to trim their deficit to 8-4. Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) snuffed out any further rally, retiring the next two batters to seal her 20th victory of the year. Thomas scattered six hits over 7.0 innings, allowing four runs. Sievert finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, while Blazich went 3-for-4 with three runs and a RBI.
Brittany Bura gave up eight runs on 12 hits to take the loss for Rockford. Bjerning led the way with two RBI and a run on 2-for-3 at the plate.
Curtis provided the initial offense for WLC again in game two, flying out to bring home Blazich and claim an early 1-0 lead. Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) tripled the Warriors' lead with a two-run double in the second that made the score 3-0.
The Regents came within striking distance in the fifth, reducing their deficit to one run. Sievert erased those runs in the next inning, launching a two-run homerun to right center to re-establish a three-run lead at 5-2. Rockford answered back with two runs in the sixth but couldn't inflict further damage.
Thomas breezed through the seventh inning in three batters to improve to 21-9. She struck out four, allowing four runs. Sievert went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Gacgacao drove in two runs, finishing 1-for-2.
Sarah Moritz took the loss, giving up five runs in 6.0 innings. Lisa Blakeley-Snyder went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI for Rockford (8-24, 4-16 NACC).
