MILWAUKEE - Emily Sievert (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) belted a walk-off grand slam to hand the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team a 9-5 win in game one on its way to a doubleheader split against Benedictine Saturday at Warrior Field. The Eagles earned the split with a 6-3 victory in game two.
Sievert gave WLC (15-13, 7-5 NACC) an early lead in game one, singling home Brittney Blazich (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) in the first inning. The Eagles (15-10, 7-5 NACC) tied the game in the third inning on an unearned run.
WLC regained the lead on an RBI double by Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) in the bottom of the fourth, but Benedictine answered back with a three-run frame in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) plated Morgan O'Hanlon (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) with a double in the bottom of the inning to trim the deficit to 4-3.
The Eagles added an insurance run in the seventh to push the lead to 5-3 heading into WLC's final at-bat. Blazich started the rally by driving in a run on a fielder's choice. Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) snuck home on an error by the catcher to tie the game 5-5, leaving the bases loaded with no outs. Sievert ensured that the Warriors wouldn't record an out in the inning, launching a grand slam over the left field wall to give WLC a dramatic comeback victory. It was her team-leading fourth home run of the season.
Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) improved to 14-7 with the complete game victory, striking out four and allowing just one earned run. Sievert finished 3-for-4 with two runs and five RBI. Blazich and O'Hanlon each scored a pair of runs.
Holly Haberkorn (5-2) surrendered nine runs, eight earned, in 6.0 innings to suffer the loss. Kailee Cable drove in three runs, while Kelly Mieszala and Sarah Koch both scored twice.
WLC's bats stayed warm into the early innings of game two. Curtis hit an RBI single in the first to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. In the third, O'Hanlon and Alicia Barbian (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) each drove in runs to make it 3-0.
The Eagles finally saw their bats come alive in the fifth, crossing home four times to take their first lead of the game at 4-3. Alex Daviera, Mieszala, Chelsea White, and Koch each drove in runs in the frame.
Benedictine tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth to double up the Warriors 6-3, and the game ended with that score.
Thomas (14-8) allowed five earned runs in 7.0 innings to take the loss. Blazich had two hits and scored twice, while Curtis was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Melissa Guzior (8-5) held WLC to one earned run in 7.0 innings to earn the win. Mieszala, Melissa Stoch, and Shannon Fritsche recorded two hits apiece.
