MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team earned a doubleheader split with Dominican Saturday at Warrior Field, falling 11-0 in five innings in game one before winning in walk-off fashion in game two 5-4.
Game one began as a pitchers' duel, with the score at 1-0 in favor of the Stars through 4.0 innings. The Warriors had a chance to inflict some damage in the fourth but exited the inning with the bases loaded still without a run.
The Dominican bats came alive in the fifth, plating 10 runs. Kimberly Giannini provided three of those runs on her second homerun of the game, preceded by a solo shot in the third. WLC couldn't scrape together any runs in the fifth as the game ended 11-0 via run-rule.
Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) suffered the loss, giving up eight earned runs in 5.0 innings. Four different Warriors hitters each recorded a hit.
Dominique Schneider improved her record to 4-1 after striking out five and not allowing a run in 4.0 innings. Giannini went 3-for-3 with three runs and four RBI.
The Warriors were able to get their first runs across in game two in the second inning, coming off a Brittney Blazich (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) two-run triple. The Stars had an answer in the third, matching the WLC run production and adding another to take a 3-2 lead. Dominican tacked on another run in the fifth to double its lead at 4-2.
The Warriors began to chip away at their deficit in the fifth, taking advantage of two errors to push another run across. In the sixth inning, Emily Sievert (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) came in to pinch hit and responded with a RBI double plating Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) to tie the game.
The Stars looked to take control of the game again in the seventh, but Thomas forced a groundout with the bases loaded to end the inning and preserve the tie. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Morgan O'Hanlon (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) doubled to left field to get the winning run in scoring position. O'Hanlon wouldn't be waiting long at second however as Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) singled to center in the next at-bat to plate O'Hanlon and come away with the victory.
Thomas improved to 11-4 after letting in four runs in 7.0 innings. Blazich went 1-for-4 with a run and two runs driven in, while Curtis went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Schneider allowed five runs in 6.1 innings to take the loss. Alyssa Domico led the Stars' (13-9, 4-2 NACC) offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run.
WLC (12-8, 4-2 NACC) travels to Concordia Chicago (5-11, 2-4 NACC) tomorrow for a 12 p.m. doubleheader. Links to live stats for both games will be available at wlcsports.com.
