MILWAUKEE - Only 10 innings were needed for Wisconsin Lutheran College (11-7) to complete its two-game sweep of Maranatha Wednesday at Warrior Softball Field. The Warriors controlled the games both offensively and defensively as they went on to a 15-1 run-rule win in game one, followed by an 11-3 run-rule win in the second game.
The Warriors and Crusaders both came out of the gate slow until Kaitlyn Robison (Andalusia, Ill./Rockridge) laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) from third to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead going into the third.
After holding Maranatha scoreless, the Warriors took advantage of Crusaders mistakes in the bottom of the third. Morgan O'Hanlon (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) started the inning off by reaching second on an error at first base. O'Hanlon scored during the next at-bat as Alicia Barbian (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) singled to center. Schalinske's sacrifice fly to center three batters later brought in Barbian from third. Two at-bats later and Tara Degl'Innocenti (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) scored on a wild pitch. Once again, an error at first base allowed Emily Sievert (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) to score from third. The Warriors added two more runs in the inning as Niki Cottini (Plainfield, Ill./North) and Rachel Christian (Sullivan, Wis./Lake Country Lutheran) scored on a wild pitch and sacrifice bunt, respectively. WLC ended the third inning in front 7-0.
Wisconsin Lutheran cushioned its lead in the fourth inning as it tallied eight more runs. Schalinske was responsible for three of those as her single to center scored two runners and she scored two batters later. The Warriors finished the inning with five earned runs and three unearned, making the score 15-0 going into the fifth. Emily Hinsenkamp brought in Amy Dineen from third base to give Maranatha its lone run, leaving the final score at 15-1.
Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) (10-3) pitched 4.0 innings and held the Crusaders scoreless as she surrendered only three hits, struck out five, and walked none. Barbian was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, Schalinske was 1-for-1 with an two runs and three RBI, and Robison recorded two RBI.
Rosa Lewis (1-4) allowed six earned runs, walked five and struck out two in 4.0 innings and took the loss for the Crusaders. Amy Dineen was 2-for-2 with one run for Maranatha (1-8).
MBU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game two, but the story sounded the same as the Warriors scored nine straight runs in the second and third innings to make the score 9-1. The Warriors and Crusaders both added two runs to make the final score 11-3.
