WLC Closes Season With Shutout Over Eagles

MADISON, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's soccer team closed out its 2019 season with a 2-0 shutout win over Edgewood at Breese Stevens Field Wednesday night. The Warriors broke a scoreless halftime draw with a pair of second-half goals en route to their season finale victory.

  • Final Score: Wisconsin Lutheran 2, Edgewood 0
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (7-9-1, 3-7-1 NACC), Edgewood (6-13-1, 3-8-0 NACC)
  • Location: Breese Stevens Field, Madison, Wis.

  • The first half featured stellar defensive play, as both teams entered the halftime break scoreless. Each team finished with two shots on target, but both goalkeepers were able to keep a clean sheet.
  • Sophomore Jason Cano (Delavan, Wis.) finally broke the scoreless game in the 74th minute for the Warriors as he scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season. Junior Alex Rivera (Milwaukee, Wis.) assisted on the goal.
  • The Warriors extended the lead nine minutes later when junior Mario Caldwell (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored his first of the season off a pass from Cano.

  • Cano paced the Warriors with four shots on goal, as WLC finished with 19 shots and eight shots on frame.
  • Both Cano and Rivera tallied their second assists of the season.
  • Junior Erek Lehnen (Fort Myers, Fla.) stopped all six shots he faced to earn his fourth shutout win of the year.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran collected five corner kicks as it won its second straight game over Edgewood in the series.

  • Edgewood attempted 14 shots, with six landing on target. Sean Surtees and Brian Root led the team with five shots and two shots on goal.
  • Goalkeeper Brandyn Storhoff finished with six saves on eight shots faced for the Eagles.

  • Wisconsin Lutheran concludes its 2019 season with a 7-9-1 overall record and a 3-7-1 mark in the NACC.
