Sabres Sneak Past Warriors In Double OT

FOND DU LAC, Wis. ( - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's soccer team played a man down in the second half for the second straight match and the host Marian Sabres overcame a 1-0 deficit by netting the game-winner in the 106th minute for a 2-1 win over the Warriors on Wednesday night at Smith Field. The heartbreaking double overtime defeat eliminates WLC from NACC Tournament contention.

  • The Warriors and Sabres played through the first 45:00 minutes of scoreless soccer. WLC placed four shots on frame, while MU countered with three.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran's first shot on target in the 55th minute of the second was successful, as sophomore Jason Cano's (Delavan, Wis.) free kick from 28 yards away bent inside the left post for a 1-0 lead. It was Cano's team-leading ninth goal of the season.
  • Cano unfortunately received his second yellow card of the match immediately after and the Green and White were forced to play shorthanded the rest of the way.
  • Following four saves from WLC junior keeper Erek Lehnen (Fort Myers, Fla.), MU knotted the score at 1-1 in the 81st minute when Chase Hayden launched a shot from 40 yards out that found its way inside the left post.
  • Freshman Josh Sepic (Mukwonago, Wis.) nearly broke the tie in the 88th minute when he hit the crossbar, but the match was sent to extra time.
  • Both sides tallied a shot each in the first overtime, but neither could break the 1-1 draw. In the second overtime, junior Alex Rivera (Milwaukee, Wis.) had a shot saved and another hit the crossbar as MU denied WLC the scoring chances.
  • The Sabres' Kyle Klusendorf netted the game-winner in the 106th minute on a rebound off a free kick to give the hosts a 2-1 win.

  • The Warriors totaled 17 shots in the contest, including seven on frame. Cano and Rivera paced WLC with five and four shots, respectively.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran tallied two corner kicks, while Marian collected eight.
  • Lehnen finished the match making eight saves while playing all 105:03.
