MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College freshman Jason Cano (Delavan, Wis.) has been named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Freshman of the Year, it was announced Wednesday as the awards for the 2018 men's soccer season were released by the conference office. In addition, seniors Yussef Sahraoui (South Milwaukee, Wis.) and Juan Serna (Milwaukee, Wis.) earned Honorable Mention recognition.
Cano, who was also selected to the 14-member First Team All-NACC, is the first Warrior to receive Freshman of the Year honors since the award was first handed out in 2008. The forward finished second in the conference in goals (15), shots (69), and shots on goal (33) and was third in points (34). Starting 17 games, Cano recorded three multi-goal games and scored in all but six of the Warriors' 18 contests. Cano's 34 points and 15 goals rank second in a season in program history.
Serna was second on the team with 19 points and nine goals, while registering three assists. The senior started 16 games and scored a hat-trick September 19 in WLC's 10-0 rout of Lakeland. He also netted the game-winning goal September 29 at Illinois Tech.
Sahraoui, who also started 16 games, tallied nine points, scoring two goals and dishing out a team-high five assists. The midfielder converted one of the team's two penalty kicks on the year September 19 vs. Lakeland and registered two games with a goal and an assist.
MSOE's Rade Novakovich was named NACC Offensive Player of the Year, while NACC Defensive Player of the Year honors went to Aurora's Jacob Lysik. MSOE's Jimmy Banks was named NACC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year.
Wisconsin Lutheran concluded its 2018 season with a 7-11-0 overall record and a 6-5-0 mark in the NACC. WLC's six conference wins were its most since the 2012 season. The Warriors also made their sixth NACC Tournament appearance and their third in the last four seasons.
