Warriors Wrap Up Regular Season With Loss At BenU

LISLE, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's soccer team suffered a 5-1 setback against the Benedictine Eagles Wednesday night in its final regular season game at The Sports Complex. Jason Cano (Delavan, Wis.) scored his 15th goal of the season in the defeat, tying him for the league lead. The Warriors will be the fifth seed in the upcoming NACC Tournament and will face fourth-seeded Concordia Wisconsin Sunday in a first round matchup.

  • Benedictine struck first in the 22' after Yair Ortego gathered a shot that was saved and found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
  • Gio Ovalle doubled the hosts' lead in the 32', then Santiago Beltran added a third goal in the 36' to give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage at halftime.
  • Cano brought the Warriors within two goals at the 58:24 mark when he took a pass from Juan Serna (Milwaukee, Wis.) and scored into an empty net.
  • Elber Haro put BenU back ahead by three goals in the 77' after he scored an unassisted goal then Willy Campos scored the fifth goal of the night for Benedictine after gathering a corner kick and beating the keeper in the 86'.

  • Cano led the Warriors with three shots, including two on goal and the lone goal for the visitors.
  • Yussef Sahraoui (South Milwaukee, Wis.) registered two shots with one coming on frame.
  • Serna tallied his third assist of the season on Cano's strike.
  • Cedric Guichard (Plantation, Fla.) suffered the loss in the net, making 10 saves in 90 minutes.
  • WLC will make its third NACC Tournament appearance in the last four years after reaching the conference tournament final at the No. 6 seed in 2016. 

  • Five different Eagles entered the scoring column in the contest while Beltran led BenU with four shots on goal.
  • Ortego scored a goal and registered an assist for the hosts.
  • Shawn Chervets earned the win in net, making one save in 80 minutes of action.

  • The fifth-seeded Warriors open NACC Tournament play Sunday, traveling to fourth-seeded Concordia Wisconsin (10-6-1, 7-3-1 NACC).
