First-Place MSOE Edges WLC, 2-1, On Alumni Day

MILWAUKEE ( – The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's soccer team played through a scoreless first half against league-leading MSOE, but the Raiders scored a pair of second-half goals and the Warriors fell by a score of 2-1 in a tightly-contested NACC battle Saturday afternoon on Alumni Day at Warriors Soccer Field. The Warriors out-shot the Raiders in the contest, 18-12.

  • Neither side was able to get on the scoreboard in the opening half as a well-defended 45 minutes of action led to a 0-0 score at halftime. Both teams had seven shots in the opening half, with WLC accounting for the only shot on target.
  • The Raiders were the first to crack the scoreboard in the 59' when Stephen Bagin fired one from the left side of the box just past the out-stretched arms of the goalie and off the right post and into the back of the net.
  • MSOE had a golden chance to add to its lead in the 67' when Rade Novakovich had a shot inside the box but Cedric Guichard (Plantation, Fla.) made a diving save.
  • WLC was close to tying it up shortly after in the 68' when KJ McNealey Jr. (Milwaukee, Wis.) beat the defender but a quick diving save from Ron Marchionna kept the MSOE lead at 1-0.
  • The hosts appeared to even the score at 1-1 off a corner in the 69' but a foul wiped the goal off the board and kept the deficit at 1-0.
  • MSOE added an insurance goal off a header from Joey Schauer inside the box from a long free kick from Konrad Knap in the 70'.
  • The Warriors cut the deficit in half in the 78' when Juan Serna (Milwaukee, Wis.) found the back of the net on a header from five yards out for his sixth goal of the season off a header assist from Jason Cano (Delavan, Wis.).

  • McNealey Jr. and Aedon Meurer (Waukesha, Wis) led WLC with four shots each, while Cano, Serna, and Noah Hernandez (Glendale, Wis.) added three apiece.
  • The Green and White held the advantage in shots at 18-12, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Guichard made two saves while suffering the loss in goal.
  • It was WLC's second straight one-goal loss to the Raiders and the fifth for the team this season.

  • Novakovich led MSOE with five shots including two on goal.
  • Bagin recorded his second goal of the season, while Schauer scored his 12th of the year.
  • Marchionna made five saves while improving to 8-0-0 in goal on the season.

  • The Warriors continue their four-match homestand Wednesday night when they host Edgewood (6-4-2, 1-2-2 NACC) for a key NACC contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Eagles play at Concordia Chicago Sunday afternoon. Live stats and video will be available at
