Spartans Prevail Over Warriors In See-Saw Battle

MONTGOMERY, Ill. (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's soccer team surrendered two goals over the final 21 minutes of the match to the host Aurora Spartans and fell by a final score of 4-3 Wednesday night at Spartan Athletic Park. Jason Cano (Delavan, Wis.) scored two goals to increase his conference lead to 10 while also adding an assist.

  • Wisconsin Lutheran jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 4' on its first shot attempt of the match when Cano struck a ball from 30 yards out past the Spartans' keeper on an assist from KJ McNealey Jr. (Milwaukee, Wis.).
  • Aurora evened the score at 1-1 in the 13' on a shot from 35 yards away from Jeremy Perales.
  • The Warriors grabbed a 2-1 lead just before halftime in the 44' on a strike into the top left corner of the goal from Connor Schodorf (Appleton, Wis.) off an assist from Cano.
  • WLC put a pair of shots on frame in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but both were saved by the AU keeper.
  • Aurora knotted the score again at 2-2 in the 60' on a goal by Kyle Seymour.
  • Cano and Wisconsin Lutheran found the back of the net nearly one and a half minutes later as he dribbled past the keeper and scored for a 3-2 lead.
  • AU matched the scored again at 3-3 in the 69' on Henry Zehnal's first of the season off a corner kick. Zehnal struck once again for the Spartans in the 78' for the eventual game winner.

  • Cano collected four of the Warriors' eight shots in the match, including a brace and an assist. He took over the NACC lead with 10 goals in the just eight games played.
  • Cedric Guichard (Plantation, Fla.) made seven saves in a losing effort.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran had two corner kicks, opposed to nine for Aurora.

  • Henry Zehnal was one of three Spartans to collect a team-high three shots, while netting a pair of goals. Jacob Lysik was credited with two assists.
  • Edward St. Martin made four saves to hold on for the win for AU, which won its second straight over WLC.
  • Aurora out-shot Wisconsin Lutheran 19-8 and 11-7 in shots on target.
