FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Jake Semmann (Grafton, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) scored the game-winning goal in the 99th minute to push the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's soccer team to a thrilling overtime victory over Marian at Smith Field Tuesday night. The Warriors are now 5-3-3 and remain unbeaten in NACC play at 2-0-1.
Late in the first overtime period, Enrique Arreola (Anna, Ill./Anna-Jonesboro) passed to Semmann, who went one-on-one with Marian goalkeeper Bryce Woldt and netted the sudden death game-winner. It was the junior's second goal of the game and fourth of the season.
Semmann gave WLC an early lead with his goal in the ninth minute of the game, assisted by Teffie Joyce (Green Bay, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran). The Warriors controlled the tempo in the first half as they out-shot the Sabres 6-0.
Marian became more aggressive in the second half and tied the game in the 64th minute on an own goal. The Warriors answered less than four minutes later when Austin Drake (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) buried his fifth goal of the season off of Arreola's assist to give Wisconsin Lutheran a 2-1 lead.
The Sabres forced overtime when David Reinke scored in the 84th minute to tie the game at two. Marian out-shot WLC 10-8 in the second half.
Goalkeeper Jon Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South) made two saves for the Warriors and Woldt stopped seven shots for the Sabres. Peltonen and Reinke each took four shots to lead Marian (3-5-1, 0-4-0 NACC), while four different Warriors attempted two shots.
The victory was WLC's first overtime win since they defeated Rockford 2-1 in double overtime October 5, 2011 at Warrior Field. The Warriors return to conference action Saturday when they visit MSOE (6-1-3, 3-0-0 NACC) for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
