Warriors Fall To NACC-Leading Raiders

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team suffered a 93-73 defeat to the visiting first-place MSOE Raiders Wednesday night inside the Recreation Complex. Collin Kennedy (Holmen, Wis.) scored a game-high 22 points, but the visitors shot 55.2 percent from the field and scored 42 points in the paint en route to victory.

  • The Raiders scored the first five points of the contest, forcing the Warriors to take a timeout just 1:26 into the game. After the timeout, Caleb Goldstein (Fond du Lac, Wis.) converted a back-door layup for the first points of the game for WLC, but MSOE answered with five straight points to extend its lead to 10-2.
  • Kennedy hit a jumper, then Andrew Bruggink (Brookfield, Wis.) converted two free throws, but the visitors maintained a 22-10 lead with 12:35 remaining in the opening half.
  • Bruggink and Goldstein connected on back-to-back jumpers to cut the deficit to eight points, then Paul Koier (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) scored a driving layup to bring WLC within six, forcing the Raiders to take a timeout of their own with 11:06 on the clock.
  • Following the timeout, MSOE increased its lead to 12 points, but Kennedy scored seven straight points for the Warriors to bring them within nine.
  • Randy Johnson Jr. (Germantown, Wis.) buried a corner triple to cut the MSOE lead to six points, but the Raiders answered with a trifecta of their own and two free throws to push their lead to eight with two minutes remaining in the opening half.
  • The two teams traded free throws in the final minutes of the first half as MSOE entered the halftime break holding a 49-41 lead.
  • Goldstein opened the second half with a triple from the right wing, but the Raiders answered with eight straight points, extending their lead to 13 points and forcing WLC to take a timeout.
  • MSOE used a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to increase their lead to 21 points, but Koier converted a layup and Bruggink buried a corner triple to keep the Warriors within 16 points with just over 12 minutes remaining in the second half.
  • Goldstein connected on another triple, but the Raiders answered with an 11-0 surge, pushing their advantage to 83-58 with 7:27 remaining in regulation.
  • Drew Bernhagen (Markesan, Wis.) and Alex VanCrete (Green Lake, Wis.) converted free throws, but the visitors maintained a 20+-point advantage with three minutes to play.
  • Braden Beiermann (Lincoln, Neb.) drained two free throws in the final minute of the contest as the Raiders tallied the 93-73 victory.

  • Kennedy led all scorers with 22 points and pulled down six rebounds, while Goldstein added 12 points.
  • Bruggink scored nine points with five rebounds and two assists, while Koier chipped in eight points and pulled down six boards with two blocks.
  • The Warriors shot 41.9 percent (26-of-62) from the floor and converted 70 percent (14-of-20) of their free throw attempts.

  • Josh Herzog led MSOE with 17 points off the bench, while Jake Gebert and Travis Ballard added 14 points apiece.
  • Michael Pitrof and Gabe Wear chipped in 11 points each to round out the double-figure scorers for MSOE.
  • The Raiders shot 55.2 percent (37-of-67) from the floor and knocked down 43.5 percent (10-of-23) of their three-point attempts.
  • MSOE out-scored WLC 42-24 in the paint.

  • The Warriors kick off a short two-game road trip Saturday when they travel to Fond du Lac to take on Marian. The Sabres (4-10, 2-7 NACC) fell to Illinois Tech 58-51 Wednesday night.
