Men's Basketball Falls To Illinois Tech

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – A 21-2 first-half run from the visiting Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks proved to be too much to overcome for the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team Thursday night, as the Warriors fell 84-65 in NACC action inside the Recreation Complex.

  • The two teams traded baskets early in the opening half and were knotted at six points apiece until the Warriors ran off six straight points to take a 12-6 lead, forcing IIT to take a timeout.
  • Illinois Tech answered with a triple out of the timeout, but Kennedy knocked down two straight three-pointers to extend the WLC lead to 18-11 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the first half.
  • The Warriors pushed their lead to 23-17, but the Scarlet Hawks used a 14-2 run to take a 31-25 lead with eight minutes to play in the first half.
  • The visitors scored seven straight points to increase their lead to 11, but Zach Zuleger (West Bend, Wis.) and Kennedy converted jumpers to bring the Warriors within nine.
  • Matty Farner (Muskego, Wis.) and Caleb Goldstein (Fond du Lac, Wis.) connected on three-pointers on consecutive possessions, but the Scarlet Hawks took a 43-35 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • Illinois Tech scored the first six points in the second half until Sam Kaufman (Spring Grove, Ill.) connected on a mid-range jumper, but the visitors maintained a 49-37 advantage.
  • Kaufman connected on a triple from the top of the key to cut the IIT lead to 10 points, but the Scarlet Hawks extended their lead to 17 points after a quick 7-0 run, forcing WLC to take a timeout with 8:54 to play in the contest.
  • The Warriors forced two straight turnovers and Goldstein connected again from beyond the arc to bring the deficit back to 10 points with seven minutes remaining.
  • IIT responded with a 17-7 run over the next three minutes to take a 76-56 advantage, forcing the Warriors to take a timeout to halt the Scarlet Hawks' momentum with 3:29 showing on the clock.
  • Kennedy converted a three-point play and Anthony Mendoza (San Diego, Calif.) hit a jumper, but the Illinois Tech lead was too large to overcome as WLC fell by a final score of 84-65. 

  • Kennedy led the way for WLC with 21 points while Goldstein added 17 points.
  • Andrew Bruggink (Brookfield, Wis.) added five points and four rebounds with two assists.
  • WLC shot 38 percent (27-of-71) from the field and knocked down 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from beyond the arc.
  • The Warriors forced 19 IIT turnovers and converted them into 23 points.

  • Anthony Mosley Jr. scored a game-high 24 points for IIT, while Jake Digiorgio added 20 points and six rebounds.
  • Max Hisatake pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds and scored 10 points for a double-double.
  • Illinois Tech shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) from the floor and converted 95 percent (19-of-20) of its attempts from the free throw line.

  • The Warriors are back in action Saturday when they travel to Benedictine for a NACC showdown. The Eagles (6-6, 3-4 NACC) fell to MSOE 71-69 Thursday in Milwaukee.
