Warriors Fall To Vikings In Non-Conference Finale

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team suffered a 65-55 setback against the visiting Lawrence Vikings Wednesday night inside the Recreation Complex. Collin Kennedy (Holmen, Wis.) scored a game-high 25 points, but the visiting Vikings pulled down 17 offensive rebounds and scored 17 second-chance points in the win over the Warriors.

  • The Vikings opened the contest with a 9-4 advantage, forcing Wisconsin Lutheran to take a timeout.
  • Kennedy scored six straight points for the Warriors, but the visitors maintained a 19-10 lead with 11:11 to play in the first half.
  • Matty Farner (Muskego, Wis.) collected an offensive rebound and scored the ensuing putback, then Andrew Bruggink (Brookfield, Wis.) buried back-to-back triples to cut the Lawrence lead to just three points with six minutes remaining in the opening half.
  • Kennedy converted a three-point play, then another layup to bring the Warriors within one point with just under two minutes on the clock in the opening period.
  • The Vikings took a 31-28 advantage into the locker room at halftime after pulling down 11 offensive rebounds in the first half.
  • Farner pulled down another offensive rebound and converted the two free throws to bring WLC within one point, but Lawrence answered with a triple to push its lead back to four with 16:40 left in the second half.
  • The Vikings increased their lead to six, but Sam Kaufman (Spring Grove, Ill.) buried a corner three, then Kennedy converted a layup off of a cutting pass from Randy Johnson Jr. (Germantown, Wis.) to bring the Warriors within one point.
  • Bruggink used a personal 5-0 run to bring the Warriors within two points again, then scored his seventh straight point to tie the contest at 47-47 with nine minutes to play.
  • The Vikings maintained a 49-47 advantage with just under four minutes on the clock, then scored six straight points from the free throw line to extend their lead to eight points.
  • After Lawrence took a 10-point lead, Johnson connected on a corner triple and Kaufman hit a mid-range jumper to bring the Warriors within five points with two minutes left to play.
  • The Vikings converted two more free throws to push their lead to seven, but Kennedy buried a triple from the top of the key to cut the LU lead to just four with 38.7 seconds on the clock.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran was forced to foul and the visitors converted six free throws in the final minute of the contest to preserve the 65-55 victory.

  • Kennedy led the Warriors with 25 points while Bruggink added 15 points with five assists.
  • Farner pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and added four points.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the floor and was held to 22.2 percent (6-of-27) shooting from deep.

  • Brad Sendell led Lawrence with 18 points while Mason Materna and Bryce Denham added 10 points each.
