Strong Second Half Sends Red Hawks Past Warriors

RIPON, Wis. ( - Ripon overcame a 10-point first-half deficit and shot 64.3 percent in the second half as the host Red Hawks defeated the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team 85-69 Saturday afternoon inside Weiske Gymnasium. The Red Hawks closed the game on a 14-2 run after the Warriors were with four with just under five minutes left.

  • The Warriors never trailed in the first half against the Red Hawks, as Collin Kennedy (Holmen, Wis.) scored 10 of the team's first 13 points.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran scored seven straight points to build its largest lead of the game at 23-13 following a Mack Knueppel (Jackson, Wis.) layup with 9:11 left in the first half.
  • Ripon trimmed the deficit to four, but WLC increased it back up to eight with just over three-and-a-half left before the break after two free throws from Colin Biesterfeld (West Bend, Wis.).
  • RC closed the first half on an 8-2 run to trail by just two points at halftime. Kennedy netted 15 first-half points as the Warriors shot 39.3 percent, opposed to Ripon's even 50 percent first-half clip.
  • The Red Hawks made eight of their first nine shot attempts of the second half to take a nine-point lead over the Warriors with 14:03 on the clock.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran came within five points on three separate occasions over the next nine minutes and trailed by just four (71-67) with 4:50 to play following a Knueppel three-pointer.
  • Ripon, however, closed out the contest on a 14-2 run and had its largest lead of 16 points when the final buzzer sounded.

  • Kennedy led three players in double figures with 21 points and a team-high six rebounds. Andrew Bruggink (Brookfield, Wis.) added 18 and Caleb Goldstein (Fond du Lac, Wis.) chipped in 11 points and four assists.
  • The Warriors shot 44.4 percent (24-for-54) for the game, made nine three-pointers, and were 12-of-15 from the charity stripe.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran has shot at least 44 percent in each of its four games this season.

  • Cal Schultz and Trent Jones scored 31 and 30 points, respectively, including 20 each in the second half to pace the Red Hawks.
  • Ripon shot 58 percent (29-for-50) from the floor, 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from three, and 75 percent (15-for-20) from the free throw line.
