MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team saw a five-point second-half lead slip away in a 74-71 loss to Dominican Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Complex.
The Warriors (4-7, 2-5 NACC) led 49-44 with 9:52 remaining in the game before the Stars (1-10, 1-6 NACC) went on a 10-0 run over the next 1:51 to take a lead they would not relinquish. Josh Mayberry paced Dominican with 15 second-half points to help turn around a 35-32 halftime deficit. The Stars were 13-for-16 (81 percent) at the foul line in the second half as they hung on to the lead down the stretch.
The first half was a see-saw battle as Dominican jumped out to a 20-14 lead with 9:35 to go in the half. The Warriors out-scored the Stars 21-12 the remainder of the half to take a three-point lead into the break.
Jake Jarnigo (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) led WLC with 21 points and four assists. DJ Escamilla (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) scored a season-high 13 and Brett Lubbe (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) recorded 10 points and a team-high seven boards.
Mayberry registered a game-high 25 points on 10-for-21 shooting and Taylor DeRoo scored 18 for Dominican. Logan Harris posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The closely-matched game saw the teams each shoot 40 percent and grab 39 rebounds. The Warriors struggled at the free throw line, shooting 62 percent (13-for-21) while the Stars shot 83 percent (19-for-23). Dominican held a 24-14 edge in points in the paint and a 16-10 advantage in second chance points.
