Warriors Dealt Another Overtime Defeat By Sabres

MILWAUKEE - For the second straight meeting against Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opponent Marian, the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team hit a shot in the closing seconds to force overtime. This time - just like in a January 12 home game against the Sabres last season - the Warriors fell short in the extra period, suffering an 84-82 defeat Thursday night at the Recreation Complex.

Jake Jarnigo (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) hit a running bank shot for the Warriors (3-3, 1-2 NACC) with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to send a game that featured six ties and 14 lead changes to overtime. The Sabres (4-3, 3-0 NACC) scored the first five points of overtime and stretched the lead to six before WLC chipped away at the deficit in the final minute.

Taylor Chladek (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) nailed all three of his three-point attempts in the opening five minutes of the game to propel the Warriors to an early 16-6 lead. Marian rallied to pull to within 37-35 at halftime. The Warriors hit 5-for-12 from downtown in the opening half and forced seven turnovers while committing four. Chladek and Kyle Stelse (Jefferson, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) scored nine apiece in the opening stanza for WLC.

The Sabres came tearing out of the locker room on a 18-8 run to grab a 53-45 lead with 14:26 remaining. The Warriors responded with an 11-2 run to take a 56-55 advantage less than four minutes later. The teams exchanged leads the rest of the way and Marian took the lead with 1:02 to play, leading to Jarnigo's game-tying shot.

Both teams shot well, as WLC out-shot Marian 47-44 percent. The Warriors made 42 percent (8-for-19) from long distance while the Sabres hit just 21 percent (4-for-19). Wisconsin Lutheran also shot 86 percent (18-for-21) from the free throw line. Marian hurt WLC on the boards, out-rebounding them 43-30 including 17-6 on the offensive glass. The Sabres held a 16-8 edge in second chance points and a 42-26 advantage in points in the point.

The Warriors continued their trend of playing tight games in NACC play, as their three conference games have been decided by a total of eight points. Jarnigo scored a team-high 22 points and dished out a team-best five assists for WLC. Stelse added 15, Brett Lubbe (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) scored 14 and Chladek had 12.

Marian has now won four consecutive meetings against WLC. Cody Veleke paced the Sabres with 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Sam Koslowski added 21 to go along with five assists.

Wisconsin Lutheran hits the road for a NACC contest at Aurora (4-3, 2-1 NACC) Saturday at 2 p.m. Live audio, stats, and video will be available on wlcsports.com.
