Vikings Pull Away From Warriors In Second Half

APPLETON, Wis. – Chris Siebert poured in a game-high 30 points to lead five players in double-figures as Lawrence handed the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team a 92-77 defeat Friday in the season opener for both teams at Alexander Gymnasium.

The Vikings netted the game's first score and held the lead for the first 4:43 of the opening half before the Warriors took their only lead of the game, 13-12, at the 13:12 mark. WLC and LU played a tightly-contested half the rest of the way, as the Warriors trailed 29-28 with just under five minutes remaining before halftime. A 7-0 Lawrence run gave the hosts their largest lead of the first half, 36-28, as they went into the locker with a five-point cushion, 41-36.

WLC shot 43.8 percent (14-for-32) from the floor in its first half of the season, compared to a similar 44.1 percent (15-for-34) for the Vikings. Jake Jarnigo (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) led the Warriors with nine first-half points. Siebert scored 21 of his 30 points in the opening period for LU.

Wisconsin Lutheran trailed by just six points, 55-49, at the 15:41 mark of the second half before the Vikings began to pull away. LU used a 10-0 run to increase its lead to 16 points with 13:30 to play, The Warriors could get no closer than 14 points the rest of the way as the Vikings led by as many as 22at 92-70 with 1:31 left.

Jarnigo finished with team-highs of 25 points and eight rebounds in his first game for the Warriors. Brett Lubbe (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) added 11 points and seven rebounds. WLC concluded the contest shooting 43.1 percent (25-for-58) from the floor The Warriors edged the Vikings on the glass, 38-36, but were out-scored 48-28 on points in the paint.

Siebert paced five Lawrence (1-0) starters in double-figures with 30 points on 11-for-15 shooting. Jamie Nikitas contributed 11 points, nine rebounds, and seven steals. The Vikings shot a stellar 53.8 percent (35-for-65) from the floor for the game.
